1. How nice-rape victims and victims of incest
are just out of luck if it happens in SD. Wonder how many of those state senators have pledged to pay the medical bills of these victims and to adopt the children they produce? I can guess the answer is none.

...it's signed by the governor. It will be before the SCOTUS within the year, IMO.

21. I'll place money that the court won't vote until after Nov.
The Fundies will probably get their 'payback' now that Alito is on the court but I think the blowback will be severe, (the majority of Americans want choice) and the Repugs know that. They'll set the date after the elections...

17. They had every intention of doing this. This has always been a goal
Edited on Wed Feb-22-06 07:33 PM by Jon8503
and they feel they have the votes on the Supreme Court they need now. So get this case to them.

Don't like it either but this is why it is important to win elections.

However, if there is such a thing as a positive out of this and always like to find some hope somewhere. Maybe just maybe this timing could backfire on them. I really do feel that people are becoming a little afraid of these people. One thing that got people nervous was the Terry Schavo deal. So, if they move on this quickly and it gets enough press which I am sure it will, people might just think it is a little more important to give some control to the democrats this November along with all the other stuff the neocons are doing they really might. I hope anyway.

However, we certainly need some better leadership in the party then what we have been getting to take advantage of these things.

35. Most of the lawmakers are male....do they really care that much
about women's freedom? Sometimes I wonder. The ability to control one's life is about CONTROL AND POWER. And when it comes right down to it, women will not go back into the back alley abortions. Women must fight this battle...not 'our people.'

36. Sadly the SD state democratic parties' official position
is against abortion, if you can believe it. I think it was Zogby that said his poll showed South Dakota's population the most anti-abortion in the nation.

27. The national Dem. party needs to hammer this home
to voters everywhere, in every state, that if we keep having a repug majority in congress, women can kiss their reproductive rights away. This should be the message every day between now and November. And they might want to really emphasize how draconian this law is.. rape and incest victims, women whose health will be threatened, all are being thrown under the bus by these fucking assholes. BOYCOTT SOUTH DAKOTA!!!!

29. Sadly, this is just the beginning
Some states started working on these before Alito was confirmed, in anticipation of his confirmation and some started imeediately after.

See: http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2006/01/23/some_states_getting_ready_to_revisit_roe_v_wade/

http://uspolitics.about.com/b/a/207575.htm

and http://www.stateline.org/live/ViewPage.action?siteNodeId=136&languageId=1&contentId=83875

Even more states have been enacting restrictions, steadily chipping away at Roe vs. Wade.

They have been wanting to overturn it and now, with the new makeup of the Supreme Court, feel emboldened to try that directly.

It's sad to think how our rights are being attacked and reduced as our nation regresses rather than progresses.
