UAE Port deal: As soon as we nix it, I say we send...
the British company packing too. I know there are many here that believe the response is based on racism, but I will plead ignorance, I had no idea our ports were run by anybody other than Americans. Our country needs to pony up and buy it back from the Brits, and then we will run it ourselves.

1. I'm beginning to think this is all a ploy to
get some Bush cronies to operate the ports.

2. I think we should pull our kids out of Iraq...
and let them run the ports, rebuild the levees, build gigantic algae farms for renewable energy, I could go on, but you get the picture.

16. We will be BEGGING Halliburton to take 'em by the time this is over.
They aren't in that biz but they weren't in Mil logistics either, back when they were close to bakruptcy.

Mark my words.

19. Possible
but they have never hesitated to stuff the pockets of their cronies before. Why would they need to go through an elaborate scheme?

3. The "British" never operated our Ports a company did.
The British do not own and run their companies. They are private firms that operate under similar practices as our American corporation. The UAE, on the other hand, owns and operates the company that will operate our ports. I think this is a big difference. It is like Communist China owning and operating our ports.

The problem with these "free trade" supporters in the administration is that they don't realize we are Not on a level playing fields. Countries like the UAE and China do not allow their wealth or control to go to individuals. Their companies run as an extension of their government. So if the UAE government decided that no Jews could use their facilities, than guess what, it would apply to our UAE controlled ports as well. If the UAE government decided that hiring known members of the Taliban into their government was OK, than guess what, it would apply to our UAE controlled ports as well. A country can tell another country that it will not follow the laws of that country, but a private firm cannot and must follow the contractual agreements.

12. Any company can break the law
Edited on Wed Feb-22-06 08:33 AM by noblecooley
And many do, but inevitably they are prosecuted when they are discovered. Something tells me that if this company does get the contract, they'll be under serious scrutiny for everything by all of the people who didn't want them here to begin with.

That's beside the point. The post above stated that as a state-owned foreign company, they wouldn't be held to our laws, and that's absolutely false.

11. Racism? Define the racists first.
Edited on Wed Feb-22-06 08:33 AM by HypnoToad
How many of them have P.C. shoved so far up their backsides that they won't be bothered to listen... so fond of seeking menace in every shadow that no matter how carefull you lay out each word as to prevent misinterpretation, they'll actively find a way to spin it INTO racism.

Unless these folks are FOR the foreign control of the US infrastructure... but China and India own plenty of that too. So maybe I am wrong in fuming for our infrastructure being sold out. Huh. I'm just a citizen, so obviously anything I have to say on America remaining owned by America is empty.

14. Why can't an AMERICAN company run the ports?
Seriously.

Why can't we do it ourselves? You know, the U.S. The country of rolling up your sleeves and getting stuff done.

WTF?

17. The 9/11 argument is moot
I have often heard 9/11 used as an argument against the UAE owning our ports. I am against any foreign country owning our ports because we have Americans jobless who can do those jobs. But 9/11 was MIHOP. So keeping the UAE out because of 9/11 is ridiculous. Bushco is just lining its pockets with rich UAE oil money, plain and simple.
