80-year-old coach wins Orange Bowl
Well, Joe Pa is only 79 and going on 80. Penn State beat Florida State in three overtimes - the game only lasted about 5 hours thanks to endless ABC commercials.

4. We are ...

... Penn State!

Woo hoo!

I couldn't watch any more after the thing went into overtime. Too nervous (and the curator of the Guggenheim was on Charlie Rose!)

I'm glad the game turned out OK for my alma mater ... But I've gotta say ... Joe is just getting too grumpy. He yells at the officials. He yells at his coaches. He yells at the camera operators ...

The dude needs to friggin' retire.

Now, I have fond memories of Joe and his teams. I've watched a lot of wonderful Penn State games since the '60s. JoePa was always very friendly when you'd run into him walking to campus from his (very modest) home in a nearby neighborhood -- a student would say, "Hi, coach," and he'd say, "How ya' doin'?"

He and his wife gave millions to a PSU scholarship in the classics. Nary a sports venue is named after him, but part of the campus library is, because of his fundraising for it. He has always stressed academics with his players.

But he's just getting too crabby for prime time. He needs to retire and have a long-deserved rest.

Hail to the Lion ... loyal and true ... hail, alma mater, with her white and blue ...

9. Too grunpy? Jeeaz Louize! This Husker thinks he's GREAT!
That man is a jewel. A rare thing in a sport that needs to make some decisions about itself.

I cheered like hell for JoPa.

Retirement (aka being forced out) would kill him. Is that what you want?

11. I agree, Joe isn't 'too grumpy', he just speaks his mind!
A jewel indeed. I laughed every time they tried to get him to entertain bullshit questions. He 'don't play that shit'.

Go joe!

22. Especially when he yaks at referees in such a way that would get other....
...coaches fired or severely reprimanded.

Additionally, I know for a fact that he uses every piece of negative recruiting he can dig up when recruiting high school players for his program.

JoePa is a real "jewel"...it just depends on how you define the word "jewel".

24. JoePa has ALWAYS had a temper -
and that game last night....he was yelling at everyone FOR his team; one of the best teams (comraderie) he's ever had. If you ask Michael Robinson, he won't tell you Joe should retire.

A 79 year old man has managed to achieve what everyone thought wasn't possible. Let him coach as long as he's able.

6. With triple overtime I thought one of them might pass out
Bowden and Paterno, I mean. Bowden wasn't paying great attention to the game, either. He started to walk across the field to shake Paterno's hand after the first (or second) overtime, not realizing the Penn State player missed the field goal. His security guard had to tell him. The dejected Penn State team walking off the field to prepare for another overtime was a good clue, too. :eyes:

17. He had this spitting kind of chewing motion going on when things got
bad. He looked like a man too reliant on giant greasy concoctions topped with bacon. He looked like a man who should always have a doctor close by.

19. Funny you should make such an observation. He owned a BBQ
greasy spoon restaurant at one time. He may still...but this I do not hold against him. Notice al the personal fouls, late hits, and general dirty play of his defense? He teaches his players to do these things as well as twist ankles, bite, and other illegal acts.

26. Well, the low block of the P.S. linebacker....
Forgot his name, I think #31? was CRIMINAL! The player that hit him should be banned from NCAA football, I was shocked there wasn't a flag. There's no need for that in football, he had the opportunity for a clean block and dropped his shoulder to the knees. That style of blocking has only one reason: creating an injury.

Sorry, I didn't see the dirt from PS and yes, that would upset me also. I did notice that holding calls were reluctant on both sides of the ball.

13. Big 10 split with the SEC
Edited on Wed Jan-04-06 02:17 AM by Elwood P Dowd
just like last year. They also split with the ACC, so it's a 2-2 wash against the southern teams.

The northern teams are doing better since they starting raiding the south and stealing some of our black athletes.

JoePa campaigned for Bush Sr. for president.

And Joe's son ran for U.S. Rep. (as a repuke) from the Harrisburg, PA, area (lost in the primary, I believe).

23. You can have him. He participates in negative recruiting against....
...other schools, and goes after referees in such a way that would cause other coaches to get fired or at least severely reprimanded.

He's a real piece of work, IMHO.
