I was shot by a shotgun once
When I was about 12 years old. My Dad and I were hunting dove in the Imperial Valley on the Mexican side. On a flat field a dove takes a low flight between me and this idiot with a shotgun. I saw him following the bird and so I turned my back and he let loose with his shot and it sprayed my back. Hurt like hell. Nothing lodged in me because the idiot was about 30 YARDS AWAY. It was hot that day so I only had a t-shirt under my hunting vest. Cheney blasted this guy short range, the rest is bull poop.

1. Not only is that meadow muffins,
the man has had a heart attack.

This is no longer even remotely amusing. It's the standard cover-up......apparently, he didn't have a license, either.

3. Here's my theory....
...drinking was involved and Whittington pissed off Cheney. Cheney shot Whittington at very close range, and the reporting of the story was delayed while Cheney and the other "hunters" got their story straight.

I agree with you...the official line is unadulterated crap.

6. I suspect that the gun just went off by accident
It could be said, in general, that they were hunting but I think it was an accidental thing.

25. That's my "take" too
Whittington believes in "the law" and constitutional rights.

I can see where he and Cheney would have opposing views. With the stress of Fitz getting closer and closer and the domesticv spying coming under close scrutiny, I can also see Cheney being more than a bit frazzled and touchy and saying "Fuck you" as he popped the guy over a difference of opinion. Like the Chimpster, Cheney doesn't like his behavior and decisions being challenged or questioned.

26. I've been going around saying "Bullshit" to that kind of story...but
then a thought hit me. Cheney is in deep shit with the Plame business among other things. So all of a sudden it occurred to me--the whole bunch was probly drunk. Harry sez something about Plamegate or about Halliburton or God-knows-what. Cheney, drunk & enraged, swings up his gun & fires.

4. One of my best (and only) friends in high school was shot with a
shotgun by his father. He was probably under 10 yards away, it really tore up his face and his shoulder.

His father went to jail, and he and his mom moved away shortly afterwards. I have no idea where he is now. That was in 1985 or so.

So Mark, on the off chance that you're reading this, I hope everything turned out well for you and your mom.

16. It wasn't. But his dad had no history of violent behavior either.
I don't know if he was suffering from depression or anything of the sort. It was a totally unexpected situation.

5. It all depends what kind of loads someone is using
Quail hunters tend to use small shot which loses velocity fairly quickly but modern high-velocity shells can do a lot of damage, even at 30 yards. There is also a risk of secondary infection from the pellets carrying bits of contamination from the clothing and contaminated skin surface.

7. The article says the shot was approximately 5mm
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=2108461&mesg_id=2108711

that's BBB size shot. No quail hunter in his right mind would use that big shot for quail. That's usually for canada Geese or for shooting at other people.

I smell a rat.

8. Yes
For quail, because they fly so erratic, you need lots of small shot. Quail take off fast and away from you, so you must have fast reactions.

Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 03:03 PM by formercia
read my lips.

A quail hunter wouldn't even carry that size shot unless they were going after bigger game....

14. That's why miz t. still doesn't like duck.
She'd always bite down on a BB with the ones here dad brought home.
She still won't even eat domestically grown duck from the grocery store.

17. Most today is steel shot
Generally when preparing game for cooking, you have to look carefully and remove any leftover shot. And be careful eating, as you would eating fish that hasn't been filleted.

23. Well,if you're careful when eating it.
Lead isn't used anymore, but biting down on a pellet still wouldn't be fun. I havn't hunted for over 20 years now.

12. Me too. For "fun". Dumb story follows:
In my late teens my buddies and I would go to the dump to shoot rats.
We used .22s, but one guy brought a .410 one day.
It was winter and we were all wearing leather jackets.
We took turns shooting at each other with the .410.
The shooter was pretty far away from the "target", probably a good 30 or 40 yards, and the target turned his back.
Felt kind of like sleet.
Now we could all say we'd been "shot".
Like I said, DUMB.

13. I agree with you
This story hasn't made sense to me since I found out they life-flighted the guy to the Corpus hospital 40 miles away. You don't do that for superficial bird shot at 30 yards, you just don't.

You are absolutely correct.

There is no way there would be that much penetration at 30 yards range with a 28 gauge shotgun.

He was within 15 yards, probably closer.

The media whores continue to lie for this monsters in this maladministration.
