WOW! David Gregory v. McClellan go at it off camera. . .Tribune reports!
Its getting ugly at the White House the Chicago Tribune reports:

The atmosphere can get pretty testy in the White House press briefing room from time to time.

But there were no cameras rolling in the Monday morning "gaggle'' today, the morning after news belatedly broke about Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shooting a hunting companion on Saturday. The broadcast sessions of press encounters with White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan are saved for formal afternoon briefings, with the morning gaggles serving as more informal warm-ups. And David Gregory, the chief White House correspondent for NBC News, was warmed up.

Why was the White House relying on a Texas rancher to get the word of Cheney's hunting accident out over the weekend, asked Gregory, accusing McClellan of "ducking and weaving.''

"David, hold on the cameras aren't on right now,'' McClellan replied. "You can do this later.''

"Don't accuse me of trying to pose to the cameras,'' the newsman said, his voice rising somewhat. "Dont be a jerk to me personally when Im asking you a serious question.''

"You don't have to yell,'' McClellan said.

"I will yell,'' said Gregory, pointing a finger at McCellan at his dais. "If you want to use that podium to try to take shots at me personally, which I dont appreciate, then I will raise my voice, because thats wrong.

Calm down, Dave, calm down,'' said McClellan, remaining calm throughout the exchange.

"I'll calm down when I feel like calming down,'' Greogry said. "You answer the question.'

My theory is that Gregory got the tar beat out of him in high school and now is trying to get back at people by annoying everyone to distraction.

He's something like 6'4". If he was picked on in high school, he must have been exceptionally wimpy. He may well have been one of the bullies, who just lucked into the perfect line of work for someone with that attitude.

I think his press pass should be pulled on the grounds of "impersonating a jackass in time of war". Or something to that effect.

What's the big deal if I'm a jerk to you? It's all a stage show, other people kill and die based on what happens here, but not you and me, David ol' buddy. Calm down, lighten up."

Gregory had exactly the right response: I'll calm down when I feel like calming down (you smug little tool of a corrupt and murderous regime). You answer the question.

Mr. Gregory:

I just read about your exchange with Scott McClellan this morning. I want to thank you for not just taking this administrations pat answers. Your job as a journalist is to hold them accountable, and from this exchange and others that I have seen televised, it is clear you are doing your job well. Kudos, and good luck in your quest to root out the truth from The Fiction Department (1984 Orwellian reference) of the Bush Administration.

51. NBC News and the Washington Post
do not take kindly to getting scooped by a local Texas paper about the Vice-President shooting someone.

52. I would last about one day in the White House press...
I would never be able to stop myself from rushing the podium and wringing that smarmy asshole's neck.

54. I predict it won't be long before Scottie

"seeks opportunities in the private sector".

A euphemism for "your services are no longer required".

His relationship with the press is becoming more and more openly antagonistic.

No doubt Rove is aware of this and he will do something about it soon.

You read it here.

It's about staying in line...Don't dare ask Scotty a pointed question, you get smirked at for grandstanding.......LOL. This from a grandstand administration.

90. Gotta love this! "No apologies were exchanged."

The two men spoke privately after the gaggle, Gregory said later. No apologies were exchanged.

"I said what I said and I meant what I said," Gregory said. He said he and McClellan get along "very well," a point agreed upon by McClellan during a brief interview.

"David's a good guy and a good reporter," McClellan added. He said that yesterday was "one of those days where I knew exactly what to expect."
