Dammit I want to walk without the fear of falling and breaking my neck. A blastocyst is not more important than a living breathing person damn it.

1. *hugs* And there are so many umbilical cords that are not being harvested
I wish I had had the ability to save or donate the ones form my kids but at that time up here in rural Maine there wasn't a program for it. Not sure if there is one now. :(

2. I'm tired of the religious right PERIOD
Unfortunately they only go away when you successfully ignore them. Of course, that's when the twats start blowing people up and killing them.

14. I agree, ignoring them, in a
condescending way, is the best path. They should be isolated and made out to be the fools they are. Maybe at that point some of the more moderate repukes will be embarrassed to be associated with them. Denied attention, they will start attacking each other. Now THAT would be fun!

The fact that Fartwell, Diamond Pat Robertson, any group with the name "Family " in it, and the rest of these freaks can say whatever they want without any followup from the "liberal" press never ceases to amaze me.

As an aside, is the modernfreaktshirts site yours? I like the designs, but notice the rest of the site is under construction.

3. Any "christian conservative" who opposes stem cell research
should be locked in the Alzheimer's Ward of a nursing home for at least a month. They know nothing of quality of life. They love fetuses which they have no fiduciary responsibility for. They only want to control others lives. Wouldn't it be great if they focused on their own damn familys?

4. Only as an aside, "E.R." kicked Bush's ass a bit on that one...
...with James Woods playing an ALS patient with near total loss of bodily control.
at one point, arguing he should be allowed to die, the Woods character shouts "Bush stopped stem cell research," as part of his (Woods') contention that he was left without hope....an excrutiating scene.
anybody else see that?

5. I did not see that
however, I would not want my wife to be ruined financially because I am lying in a vegetative state because some hatefilled radical christian cleric "values" life. If they want to be kept alive "artificially" for years on end, that's their business. That is not my idea of quality of life and my two cents worth on my life should be so much more than the dobson's of the world. They hate hate in the name of Jesus Christ in a tax exempt status and they are pure fucking evil.

18. I ws very surprised by Woods' comment....
since I thought he was a Bush supporter. Good for him for delivering that line!

I don't watch prime time often, but I made a point of watching that episode because of the subject matter. It did give me some insight into ALS.

13. "They love fetuses which they have no fiduciary responsibility for."
Well said.

Yet, ironically, they will end up having a fiduciary hand in these unwanted children being born, in that we all will suffer rising crime rates, more child abuse/treatment of abuse, more court cases against parent abusers, more people on welfare b/c they can't afford the children, rising taxes, etc.

25. There's nothing "Christian" about it.
A true Christian would want to help the sick and suffering.

6. The Fundies Are Seeking To "Establish" a Religion
that is, they are trying to make a religion-specific definition part of the general public law of the land.

First Amendment

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

And my religion specifically PERMITS stem cell research. See this paper by Rabbi Daniel Eisenberg, MD,

Therefore the actions of the fundies to prohibit stem cell research is an attempt to "establish a religion" and are an attempted prohibition on "free exercise".

First Amendment

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

7. Need to look these people in the face
see the faces of disease and infirmity. Stem cell research has helped in other countries and could help our people here.

It just seems like they want the fetus's to live, but after that they don't want to do shit to help them at all....

Edited on Sat Feb-11-06 12:43 PM by DanCa
that said if our people went over seas for Stem Cell Research that we couldn't go back into the country if people went for therapy? Honestly, thank god we shot it down.

You can do a search for texans for stem cell research. My friend Terry runs the organization. The bill I mentioned is about about nine months old.

19. I'm tired of their ignorance.
The source of these embryonic stem cells is embryos from in vitro fertilization clinics, embryos targeted for destruction... IVF clinics create excess embryos, routinely discarding thousands of these unwanted excess embryos, throwing them in the garbage.

Yet, to listen to the ignorant RRW, one would think that embryos are created for stem cell research rather than for IVF... one would think that stem cell research is responsible for the destruction of the excess embryos... and if there were no stem cell research no embryos would be destroyed. Ignorance & BS of the RRW trumps knowledge & saving lives. So, which life is sacred when embryos are routinely discarded, and people suffering from diseases are denied cures?

21. I just wish that one of them would visit a Stem Cell lab.
The researchers take great precautions against their fears and they repeat the same old line. Even the bills which are "pro stem cell" offer assurances against human cloning. And than on top of it they dint want the sick and the poor in their churches. It really, really gets me angry. And trust me you wont like me when I am angry.

How do you educate someone who doesn't want to be educated, someone who seems to prefer living according to their ignorant fears & to spread their ignorant fears?

20. Good luck in D.C., Dan!
I have a child who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was four years old and has been living with the pain and hassle for nine years now. Although, she has a very good spirit about it, I'm furious at BushCo and the RW Fundies that think cells in a petri dish have more rights than you or my child!

Has your organization solicited support from other groups that would benefit from stem cell research?

I am more of a hired gun (lol) I don't know about solicitating from others. Right now there's so many different pd organizations that were trying to clean our own house and streamline into one or two groups.I am so sorry to hear about your child. My thirteen year old niece has hemophilia. If it's okay may I say a prayer?

30. I hear ya
Both my mother and mother in law are suffering with Alzheimers. My father died of an autoimmune disease and I am living with one myself that could very well kill me. Stem cell research may have helped us all.

Aren't most of the embryos that were to be used marked for destruction anyway?

I'm sending a hug to you DanCa.
