As I read DU and DUers thoughts, hopes and dreams about tomorrow I realize I am not included.

I am not included in tomorrow because in the natural progression of life my future is in the days I have left behind.

When I read of political happenings of tomorrow I find myself glossing over it because I will not be there. It will not affect me.

It is frustrating this feeling of defeat. I cannot speak for others in my age group but I am sorry I failed to deliver a better future to my children and grand children as well as to you and to your children and grand children.

Just so.

4. As a women in her 30's....I have chosen not to have children..

for all of the reasons you have said....what future is there for them?? I can take care of myself and will fight for the freedom that others died to give me...but I will choose not to bring a life into a world where I can not be sure that their future is truly free...heck we think we are free but really we are not....

last June. We were very active in politics in the sixties and seventies my wife and I. We saw many successes and an equal number of failures. But I always thought our efforts on both sides to be fairly honest and open. I do not see that anymore not even on the local level.

Very disappointing and depressing.

18. Cabin fever here in the north country

Cabin fever and lack of meaningful exercise leads to morbid thinking. It has been shut in weather the last couple of weeks.

People around here are having hard times heating their homes.

I have been thinking about Robert Service and 'The Cremation of Sam McGee'. A warming up tale. Hahahaha.

I do intend to snap out of this, but still my thoughts are valid.

My little girl was just here. Set the garbage out for us. She is all smiles pushing forty and finishing up nursing school. Baby Pat has never ever given up.

I know that is one reason I can't live up north anymore. Not enough light in the winter. The thing that always gets me out of a funk is losing myself in making something...anything. Knitting, painting, whatever.

I am of the generation subsequent to your's and I suggest it is we who have let your victories slip from our grasp. From apathy & distraction, there are far too many excuses. I share your disappointment and I know we have failed our children and the future.

Sometimes our most important contributions are those that cannot be seen, they are only felt by those with whom we come into contact. It is those 'feelings' and 'vibes' that we give to others that can result in necessary actions. After reading your posts for a long while, I can feel the vibes, and I am sure that i am not alone. 9. Have you taught your children and grandchildren

the importance of their vote? Do they know the importance of not being a racist? These are just a few of the things that I work on with my children ages 24 and 13. We discuss politics, abortion, homosexuality, voting rights, etc. We are a Christian family, however I am pro choice, pro gay marriage, etc. We discuss politics on a daily basis in my house. I was raised in a very racist home in Detroit. The "N" word was frequently used. I have made it my duty to break many of the cycles of racism and violence that have permeated my family. I know my children and all of their friends are so much more progressive than my generation. They are so accepting of all people and for that we should be proud. I am sure you taught your children many of the same things. Maybe our attempts to create compassionate human beings will bring to an end some of the things we get so frustrated about. Eventually, there will be more people of peace than there are these days. Don't get down on yourself. Any person who has the ability to be saddened by the state of our country, must have given the best he/she has to offer to improve it. Sorry for the rant, but I know how it is to be disheartened and I don't want you to beat yourself up!

13. I come to the same conclusions

at times. I've already fought these fights. I'm old and tired and just do not have enough left to fight them again. I'm too vulnerable to be effective.

I'm 52. I'm sick, chronically exhausted, in constant pain. I've discussed just what you said with my best friend more than once. He kept telling me: You tried, you did the best you could. Now you cannot do anything anymore - but others can carry the beacon. And you can still serve as an example.

I think he's right. We can not carry the world on our shoulders. Just a small part of it. And what good we can do there can not always be seen. But you did do good.

Tomorrow, tomorrow and tomorrow... Projecting into tomorrow requires some sense of stability that the systems and means are somehow constant. Today I accept that that is no longer the case.

I'm quite happy to be so old. Never really expected to hang around here this long. TODAY I coo at babies, tolerate toddlers who want to climb up on my lap on the tram with their damn snotty noses (I'm a fucking toddler magnet! I look at them, smile and say hello, then they demand my undivided attention, which I happily give. Went into a pizza parlor and engaged the son of the owner, damned if the kid didn't scream and cry when he couldn't leave with me. It's really WEIRD!) My kids are adults now... GOTT SEI DANK!
