"There's a tradeoff between liberty and security." Sigh.
Edited on Mon Jan-02-06 06:33 PM by bigtree
That's the new year's mantra from the White House apologists. It's an old one, but they seem to think they have a point here and are trotting it out again. Maybe they're just desperate and running out of excuses for their meddling.

I don't know why anyone would buy the argument that we have to give up our freedoms to defend them. The Bush propaganda machine seems to think there are folks out there who will. Man, that's weak. Al-Qaeda can't bomb our freedoms away according to Bush, but, he'll offer them up on his own in exchange for a piece of that totalitarian pie.

It's good to be king.

11. Liberty is security. You give up your liberty, you give up your...
...ability to defend yourself from the government.

2. And here's the kicker: we aren't getting security we traded liberty for
It's one thing to propose a tradeoff and discuss. It's another for Bush to secretly take our liberties and give us shit for protection in return. Is there a reason why he hasn't implemented the 9/11 commission recommendations while pressing full speed ahead with the big brother stuff? Sure is. He wants big brother more than he wants actual security from terror.

I think our founding fathers realized that crime and war aren't the only ways a citizen can get hurt. Government can legally hurt us, too, and can't be trusted entirely.

3. What real security do we have? Witness what
happened after Katrina, and we should all be able to see how messed up their gift of 'security' really is.

4. Old Line/New Line
Edited on Mon Jan-02-06 06:52 PM by mcscajun
Old: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." -- Benjamin Franklin

New: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to obtain the illusion of security, deserve to have their asses kicked up and down the public street like the weak-kneed lamebrains they are."

I still like old Ben's line better, don't worry. :)

your responding, "Sad but true...".

Not a good header, if I may say so. Your post gives a different picture, of course.

8. It's funny. They want to protect us from everything... except ID theft.
That's when it's up to each of us to protect and defend ourselves.

(Why? It's too costly for companies to be responsible for the systems they've created, that's WHY.)

9. Freedom IS liberty
I thought Bin laden hated us for our freedom? Does taking away our freedom make him not hate us anymore? It will never wash in this country. Let them try.

14. There is a tradeoff between liberty and security
Freedom by nature isn't secure. Being secure isn't being free. They aren't the same. I don't have a problem with that-I have a problem with people who believe that it's the government's job to make us secure. It isn't. Life is full of risks. Now, the government can do things to lessen those risks, such as a social safety net, but it shouldn't be government's job to see to it that nothing happens to us. For that to happen they must take our rights away, because freedom and security are polar opposites.
