Republican Who Oversees N.S.A. Calls for Wiretap Inquiry
WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 — A House Republican whose subcommittee oversees the National Security Agency broke ranks with the White House on Tuesday and called for a full Congressional inquiry into the Bush administration's domestic eavesdropping program.

The lawmaker, Representative Heather A. Wilson of New Mexico, chairwoman of the House Intelligence Subcommittee on Technical and Tactical Intelligence, said in an interview that she had "serious concerns" about the surveillance program. By withholding information about its operations from many lawmakers, she said, the administration has deepened her apprehension about whom the agency is monitoring and why.

5. She's doing some serious butt-covering.
She's not the most popular legislator in NM, and she's been tainted in the Abramoff thing. This is grandstanding for the gallery. Doubtless the fix is in already and there will be either no investigation, or the kind of cursory, "No one sworn in and no hard questions" investigation we're being treated to now.

But she'll be able to point out how "independent" she is and how she's not part of the ol' Culture of Corruption, doncha know.

cynically,
Bright

10. Josh Marshall weighs in
Heather Wilson is a Republican from a tenuous swing district centered around Albuquerque. (Today her opponent released a poll showing her tied in the low-40s in her race for reelection.) Every position Wilson takes is finely calibrated to keep her politically well-positioned since she'll probably never have a truly easy race in her district. You may remember that early last year we had some fun trying to get her to actually come clean on whether she would reveal her position on phasing out Social Security.

Is this just a decision on the merits in her role as subcommittee chair? Or does she have s read on the politics going into November?

13. Bullshit, this is NOT what it appears
"By withholding information about its operations from many lawmakers, she said, the administration has deepened her apprehension about whom the agency is monitoring and why."

This is just for show -- we've seen the same gameplay from the Repubs before. Wilson expresses apprehension on behalf of her constituents, the rest of the Repubs reply "Why, of COURSE we're only monitoring suspected terrorist communications," Wilson breathes a dramatic sigh of relief, and the people stop clamoring.

Don't buy into this crap, the Repugs don't EVER do the right thing unless it somehow benefits them!

15. I have to agree
Until we see Tice on a list of those who testify, it's safe to assume the congressional hearings are a dog and pony show.
