In Europe, where gasoline taxes are generally much higher leading to a much higher price at the gas pump, those gasoline taxes are generally used to fund projects as diverse as highway infrastructure, public transportation, and the remediation of the detrimental environmental consequences of the transportation system. This promotes both a more efficient use of gasoline and, more importantly, inhibits the energy and transportation industries from externalizing the high cost of their adverse effects on society.

Ask not what's the price of the gas in your neck of the woods, but what are you purchasing for the dollars you spend at the pump.
