Enough!
I had a daydream where tens of millions of Christians stood up in churches, when their pastors/priests promoted the pro war, anti-woman, anti-gay policies of the Bush administration, and yelled "ENOUGH!" at their preacher.

"You have nothing to do with what Jesus taught, you are infecting our children with vile hate and bigotry and you are promoting an adminstration that would have made Christ weep with despair. Your time is up! Enough!"

One can always daydream, I suppose.

2. THe problem with that scenario
is that there simply aren't tens of millions of followers of Jesus. The religion that bears his name has very little to do with the man. The religion of Christianity has followed an agenda of hate, violence, and bigotry since its very founding (which was actually hundreds of years after Jesus died).

Onward Christian soldiers. Bush is not manipulating Christianity. He is simply feeding it the kind of red meat it has always lived on.

5. Who's talking about abandoning organized religion?
What I got from the OP was the congregations standing up and telling those pastors that are trying to railroad end-times politics down everyone's throats to shut up. I don't see an abandoning of all religion.

6. Make your daydream a reality.
Go to the churches where pastors/priests promote the pro war, anti-woman, anti-gay policies of the Bush administration, and do what you wish others would do... and perhaps others might join you.

What was it that Gandhi said?
"You must be the change you want to see in the world."

7. Oh yeah. Like standing up in churches where I am not a member
would really go over well. All it would do is alienate those I am trying to reach.

In order for my daydream to work, it would have to be parishioners doing it. Not outsiders.

My own church is very progressive, so there is no need for me to do it there either.

8. Is your daydreaming reaching them?
Or is it just easier to daydream?

9. Well, it's better to daydream, I suppose
than actually alienate people. I would gladly, however, organize for people to do this in their OWN churches. But your original suggestion would not fly. I do, btw, a lot of campaign work, donate $$ every chance I get, so I think daydreaming is not a bad thing as long as it's accompanied by hard work. ;)

10. When the minister asks the congregation to share prayers, concerns, etc...
A non-alienating prayer suggestion...

"I pray that this country will do what Jesus taught, that we will not infect our children with vile hate and bigotry, and will not promote or accept policies that would have made Christ weep with despair.'
