Anti-war sign gets a rude welcome

By Nancy McCleary
Staff writer

Living in a military town isn’t going to stop Catherine McLin from protesting the war in Iraq. Nor will those who destroy the “No War” signs she puts in the front yard of her home on Morganton Road.

“I plan to keep putting them up,” McLin said Tuesday.

She put up a sign, made of discarded patio blinds and wood, on Thursday. It was only hours before it was destroyed, she said.

Undaunted, she went back to work and created several smaller signs that she has put on her front lawn. She said she lobbied her neighbors and nearby residents to put signs in their yards. Three people agreed to do so, McLin said; 30 turned down her request.

McLin, a military wife, said she wasn’t surprised at the reaction. After all, this is a military town. She and her husband moved to Fayetteville in July and bought their home in September.

(This is from Wednesday, so not sure if it has been posted here yet. I'll try to get over to Fayetteville this weekend and take some pics.)

1. She should booby trap her signs to catch them in the act of vandalism.
A string is tied between two fixed objects and suspends a tin can containing a few rocks. When triggered, this booby trap only makes noise. The noise simply alerts whoever set the trap that an intruder is nearby.

4. Slathering them with BenGay also works
Vaseline works nicely, too, but BenGay gives 'em that tingly feelin' for their troubles.

11. She should get one of these:

It's a motion-activated sprinkler intended to keep pesky critters away.

3. I sincerely hope that destruction of the signs is the
extent of the damage she suffers for her efforts. They just moved to the community and may not have the support system to fight off a rougher response.

This is one brave tootsie.

8. The people destroying the signs are fighting for our freedoms?
How ironic.

9. As someone who grew up on Naval Air Stations from ...
Chincoteague, to Virginia Beach, to Jacksonville, to Pensacola, to Alameda; you have no idea how much courage it required for this woman to do what she did. This old Navy brat and ex-grunt salutes her.
