Pelosi Won't Block Iraq Funding to Stop Troop Surge
Jan. 18, 2007 — There may be a growing battle between Congress and the president over the Iraq War strategy, but new House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said she won't block funding for additional troops.

Pelosi's position, revealed in an exclusive interview with ABC News' Diane Sawyer, came a day after a group of senators announced a bipartisan resolution condemning the Bush administration's plan to increase U.S. forces in Iraq by more than 20,000 troops.

While the Senate resolution would be non-binding, it would send a message to the president, and at least a dozen Republican senators have already offered their support.

Below is an excerpt from Sawyer's interview, in which Pelosi said Democrats in Congress would not be held responsible for putting the soldiers in the troop surge in additional harm's way by blocking funds.

It was political. Very carefully political. I'd look at it carefully to see the wiggle room.

2. You're against the will of your own rank and file, Nancy
Nadler has a bill to get out of Iraq, Farr ditto. The Progressive Caucus just unveiled their detailed plan. Kucinich has his plan. And Murtha has made clear he intends to use his position to block funding.

What is her problem?

IT'S NOT AN ACCEPTANCE SPEECH: IT'S A CHECK-LIST!

"Our pride and our prayers are united behind our men and women in uniform... In this Congress we must work together to build a future worthy of their sacrifice...

Hope -- That is what America is about... By electing me speaker you have brought us closer to the ideal of equality that is America's heritage and America's hope... It's an historic moment for the Congress... for the women of America. It is a moment for which we have waited over 200 years. Never losing faith, we waited through the many years of struggle to achieve our rights... Never losing faith, we worked to redeem the promise of America, that all men and women are created equal. For our daughters and our granddaughters today we have broken the marble ceiling... now the sky is the limit...

The election of 2006 was a call to change, not merely to change the control of Congress but for a new direction for our country. Nowhere were the American people more clear about the need for a new direction than in the war in Iraq. The American people rejected an open-ended obligation to a war without end. It is the responsibility of the president to articulate a new plan for Iraq that makes it clear to the Iraqis that they must defend their own streets and their own security, a plan that promotes stability in the region and a plan that allows us to responsibly redeploy our troops...

The American people also spoke clearly for a new direction here at home. They desire a new vision, a new America built on the values that have made our country great. Our founders envisioned a new America driven by optimism, opportunity and strength... They envisioned America as a just and good place, as a fair and efficient society, and as a source of opportunity for all.

Now it is our responsibility to carry forth that vision of a new America into the 21st century.

A new America that seizes the future and forges 21st-century solutions through discovery, creativity and innovation, sustaining our economic leadership and ensuring our national security.

A new America with a vibrant and strengthened middle class for whom college is affordable, health care is accessible and retirement reliable... that declares our energy independence, promotes domestic sources of renewable energy and combats climate change... that is strong, secure and a respected leader among the community of nations...

After years of historic deficits this 110th Congress will commit itself to a higher standard: Pay as you go; no new deficit spending. Our new America will provide unlimited opportunity for future generations, not burden them with mountains of debt. In order to achieve our new America for the 21st century we must return this House to the American people. So our first order of business is passing the toughest congressional ethics reform in history.

This new Congress doesn't have two years or 200 days. Let us join together in the first 100 hours to make this Congress the most honest and open Congress in history.

One hundred hours.

This openness requires respect for every voice in the Congress. As Thomas Jefferson said, every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle.

My colleagues elected me to be speaker of the House, the entire House. Respectful of division of our founders, the expectations of our people and the great challenges that we face, we have an obligation to reach beyond partisanship to work for all America.

Let us stand together to move our country forward, seeking common ground for the common good.

We have made history. Now, let us make progress for the American people.

May God bless our work, and may God bless America."

U.S. House Approves Cut in Interest Rates on Student Loans

By Karin Crompton

The U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly today to approve a bill that would cut in half interest rates on federally subsidized student loans over the next five years.

The vote was 356-71, according to a spokesman for U.S. Rep Joe Courtney, D-2nd District.

"Today's bipartisan vote to cut the interest rate in half on federally subsidized student loans over the next five years will help make a college education more affordable and more accessible for our next generation of leaders and innovators," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said in a press release issued soon after the vote.

"At a time when college tuition continues to skyrocket, this crucial legislation will help remove some of the barriers to a higher education," Pelosi said.

Senate Panel Adds Tax Cuts, Deferred-Pay Rule to Minimum Wage
Jan. 17 (Bloomberg) -- The Senate Finance Committee voted to add $8.3 billion in tax breaks for small businesses to legislation that would increase the minimum wage... by $2.10, to $7.25, over two years, the first such increase in a decade.

Other tax cuts include an increase to $112,000 the amount of equipment businesses can expect on their tax returns in a single year rather than depreciate over time... allowing restaurants and retailers to deduct improvements to buildings over 15 years, rather than the 39-year schedule under current law.

House passes 9/11 security bill
January 10, 2007

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The first item on the House Democrats' "100 hours" legislative agenda, a measure to implement some of the recommendations of the 9/11 commission, passed on Tuesday evening.

The vote was 299-128.

Nearly 70 Republicans crossed party lines to vote for the package. It mandates full inspection of air and sea cargo entering the United States and shifts more homeland security funding to communities with high-risk terror targets.

House passes MORE ethics reform, budget rule

By Richard Cowan
Fri Jan 5, 2007

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The new Democrat-led House of Representatives on Friday passed a second batch of ethics reforms in as many days and resurrected controls they said would help end deficit spending.

One day after taking over the House after Republicans' 12-year rule, Democrats won rules changes they claimed would restore civility to the badly tarnished chamber and curb "earmarks" -- special-interest money and tax breaks often secretly inserted into legislation.

The move won applause from some of the most conservative House Republicans, including Rep. Jeff Flake (news, bio, voting record) of Arizona, who said Democrats "had more guts than we did to tackle earmark reform in a meaningful way. I compliment them for that."

House Passes Medicare Drug Bill

Measure Would Require Government to Seek Lower Prices

By Christopher Lee
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, January 13, 2007;

The House voted yesterday to require the government to negotiate lower prescription drug prices for Medicare beneficiaries. But the measure faces an uncertain future in the Senate, a veto threat from President Bush, and considerable doubts from experts about whether it would save elderly and disabled Americans much money.

The vote was 255 to 170, with 24 Republicans joining 231 Democrats in approving the legislation.

The bill overturns a provision of the 2003 law pushed through by a Republican-controlled Congress that left drug-price negotiations under the new Medicare drug benefit to the private insurers that offer government-subsidized drug plans for seniors in each state.

48. Yes, that is what we were recently told....
...I work for the Army and the head of the project wants it done by December, but the contractor does not see that as realistic and suggest that it looks more like August of '08.

Now, "broke" could mean just for project funding as far as the Army goes. Financial definitions could mean that in Army talk, they want to cut the funding for porjects in order to have funds for their warmongering. Thats my perspective anyway, Congress is going to cut the funds for these illegal wars and *Co is going to cut funding to different sectors in order to have the money to warmonger illegally.

But yes, the C.O. of the project told the contractor of this project that the Army was BROKE. There are no military funds to construct anymore facilities to finish the job, but the contractor has offered to pay for that and I have yet to hear anything more in regards to that deal...

So you oppose the escalation through house resolution, however refuse to block Congressional funding of the escalation.

Nancy, do not give into the pressure of fear towards labels that the GOP will attempt to brand you with when you REFUSE to fund the escalation.

If they want to escalate the war, tell them to find a way to fund it that doesn't involve taxpayer expense. Tell them to find the millions and billions missing in the Pentagon and on the streets of Iraq.

47. I found this..have you seen
it?

In an exchange of harsh rhetoric that underscored the intensity of the political fight, Pelosi, D-Calif., said the war should not be "an obligation of the American people in perpetuity."

"The president knows that because the troops are in harm's way, that we won't cut off the resources. That's why he's moving so quickly to put them in harm's way," Pelosi said on ABC's "Good Morning America."

When asked whether she thought the president manipulated the deployments to avoid congressional action, Pelosi said she hoped he did not but thought "he could have told us about it sooner. ... We found out about it as the troops were going in."

I'm a bit disgusted with Our Team...
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/17/AR2007011702096.html?referrer=email

Lawmakers were introducing Iraq legislation at a mad pace yesterday, at one point in the afternoon scheduling news conferences in half-hour intervals. By the end of the day, they had issued more bills than Pepco.

Early risers saw Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) in the Senate television gallery introducing his proposal to limit U.S. troops in Iraq to 130,000 and to hold a vote on whether to reauthorize the war. Those who lingered until lunchtime could catch Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.) and other House liberals demanding a withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Iraq within six months.

Booking the Senate TV studio at 2:30 p.m. were Sens. Joseph Biden (D-Del.), Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), with their own Iraq resolution. They had to vacate the room at 3 p.m. for the arrival of Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) and Rep. John McHugh (R-N.Y.); Clinton floated a variation of the Dodd plan. Minutes after that session, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) issued a statement announcing legislation ordering a "phased redeployment" of U.S. troops from Iraq.

Even Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, who gave up his Senate seat, tried to get a piece of the action yesterday. His campaign sent out a fundraising appeal, asking: "Please chip in to help stop this escalation today."

The parade of lawmakers past the microphones lured a crowd to the Senate TV studio, where nearly 200 reporters and staffers squeezed four deep in the aisles; scores more were stuck outside. "I'm not going to have any senators in here before I have order in this room!" cried the gallery director.

But the excitement was misplaced. For all the bills introduced yesterday, none is likely to force President Bush to change course in Iraq. Proposals such as Biden's are "nonbinding" and others don't have enough votes to pass. "There is very little chance in the short run that we are going to pass any legislation," Clinton confided during her news conference. Asked to elaborate, she explained: "I can count."

If anything, the competing proposals could strengthen Bush's hand. Though largely united in opposition to Bush's plan, members of Congress, carved up by the presidential ambitions of Clinton, Obama, Dodd, Biden and others, can't unite around an alternative.

emphasis mine

It seems they've kind of lost sight of the main objective here...
so many of them are throwing their hats into the ring and trying to come up with a really good bill that they can point to in 2008...
:bounce:(Looky! Looky! MY bill stopped the war!) that there isn't enough support behind any ONE bill to have teeth in it. :banghead:
People...can we forget the politics just for a minute? There's people DYING while you bicker. And if you can work together on this, it looks really good, actually...it says "I can put my own personal aspirations aside and work for the good of the ENTIRE COUNTRY."
Voters really go for that kind of thing. Trust me.

Do something. Don't just sit on your laurels over a few weenie bills
that do a little to help people after all the damage done by BushInc
and well all the corporofascists of the last thirty years.

Get real! None of those bills are going to mean a damn thing if
our country continues on its downward economic spiral... as
well as making enemies everywhere.

46. I don't think I could vote for blocking funds....
You are basically telling a 19-year old private in the middle of God knows where who is there because he was told to be there "You're on your own, kid."

I just don't think I could do that.

What needs to be done - as I see it - is just to make Bush's life as miserable as possible until he agrees to some sort of withdrawal plan. Start attacking any program/issue/etc he cares about. Hold up all appointments. That sort of thing.

49. *Co implemeted deployment behind everyones back....
...The Troops have already began to be sent out before Congress was aware of it, so cutting funding now would look as though the DEM congress "isnt supporting the troops".

They have to be careful with this issue and find some way of redeploying troops without cutting off their nose despite their faces. *Co flanked them, made a move knowing that if he didnt do it in a criminal fashion and left congresss to vote on it that the troops would not be going to Iraq as we speak.

*Co is a decitful, lying asshole. But we already know that.
