are these real Clinton quotes? need to debunk freep-mail. Thanks!

"We can't be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans." -- President Bill Clinton

"The purpose of government is to rein in the rights of the people" -- President Bill Clinton

"If the personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution inhibit the government's ability to govern the people, we should look to limit those guarantees." -- President Bill Clinton

"You know the one thing that's wrong with this country? Everyone gets a chance to have their fair say." -- President Bill Clinton

1. Just ask for sources to the full speech.
First off, I doubt you'll even get that because the OP probably doesn't have it. Most freeps just C&P from someplace else. If by some freak you get the sources to the full speech (if they even exist) the context will be your answer.

Unfortunately you are probably wasting your time. The kind of freeps who post stuff like this are lack the cognitive ability to understand context or humor.

7. Agreed - a favorite RW tactic is to take things out of context
and twist the remaining words around to suit their purposes.

For all we know, it could be, "My opponent believes the purpose of government is to rein in the rights of the people" -- President Bill Clinton

2. google is your friend, try using it
and who cares what Clinton said, he hasn't been in power or held office in 6 years. You let me know any democratic party leader in office today that says any of those things, then I will be alarmed.

Nobody said Big Dawg was perfect and he isn't office either. :hi:

I thought someone here might have been hit with it before. Thanks!

5. That last one sounds totally tongue-in-cheek.
In any event, who cares? It's what he DID that matters.

In Bush's case, he just simply lies while decimating---and worse---our rights.

I once had a free republic member give me head and it was so damned bad and so damned messy. I heard they fucked up things but wow I never imagined.

8. Simple! Ask for sources.
I'll give you a thousand to one that verifiable sources cannot be found. This is pure Right-Wing Bullshit.

9. a fuller quote
President William J. Clinton: "We can't be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans to legitimately own handguns and rifles...that we are unable to think about reality." USA Today, March 11, 1993

10. Yes there are real quotes ....
but found something interesting. This is the complete sentence of the first quote:

"We can't be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans to legitimately own handguns and rifles."

If you do a google search on these comments, you will find a majority of them are from pro-gun/pro-NRA sites and forums.

While I can't find where these phrases originate, tell the person who sent these quotes to give the sources. Otherwise it's "junk chain mail".

12. more complete quote
"I think -- you know, we can't be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans to legitimately own handguns and rifles -- it's something I strongly support -- we can't be so fixated on that that we are unable to think about the reality of life that millions of Americans face on streets that are unsafe, under conditions that no other nation -- no other nations -- has permitted to exist."-- Bill Clinton, former United States President

22. Not just out of context- they deliberately chop the ends off the sentences.
Edited on Fri Jan-05-07 11:45 PM by impeachdubya
It'd be like claiming George Bush ordered a plate of steaming shit to eat at a Chinese restaurant because he said "I'll have the poo poo" when the full sentence was "I'll have the pupu platter"

The irony is, that crowd doesn't give a shit (excuse the pun) about personal freedom or rights- they'd be happy to see women dragged off to prison for taking the birth control pill or gays put to death by stoning- just as long as no one fucks with the high-powered weaponry stashed in their basements.

11. I just did a quick google on ONE of the quotes
the only place that seemed to have this quote is a bunch of Right Wing Radical Anti-Clinton websites.
It "might" be possible that one of those spewtards made them up and they have been quoted from one garbage site to another.

15. Yes, they're real, but out of context, they take on different meanings

"We can't be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans." -- President Bill Clinton

YES, BUT - the rest of the sentence is "to legitimately own handguns and rifles." Which makes this partial quotation false and misleading. From a speech given March 1, 1993

"The purpose of government is to rein in the rights of the people" -- President Bill Clinton

YES. Taken from an MTV interview, May 29, 1993.

"If the personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution inhibit the government's ability to govern the people, we should look to limit those guarantees." -- President Bill Clinton

YES, March 1, 1993. The statement was in reference to weapons sweeps of public housing projects. Clinton maintained that the safety of residents was paramount over certain constitutional rights.

"You know the one thing that's wrong with this country? Everyone gets a chance to have their fair say." -- President Bill Clinton

YES, from a speech at Philadelphia city hall, May 28, 1993

Out of context, each of these sounds foolish. In context...you be the judge.

Hint: you can look up a complete sentence on Google by enclosing the sentence in quotation marks. Ignore the politically biased sites; instead look for the sources that provide the sentence within context.

Peace.

17. Yes they are...taken out of context and printed on just about every RW site.
This one lists where the statements were made and completes like one or two of them.

Edited on Sat Jan-06-07 12:53 AM by WinkyDink
Supposedly on "MTV, 1993", yet NO month, date, place. No article. Just RW websites quoting each other.

Funny, this is the only provable MTV interview from 1993:
