First of all, don't go to the General Discussion groups. You will be discovered almost immediately. If you really want to infiltrate, go to the DU Lounge and talk bullshit or even go to the gun nut page or numerous other special topics and build up your post total. Get 3 or 4 hundred posts under your belt and then when you come to General Discussion, you will have a better chance at surviving because people may think you have been posting for quite some time and, though your views may be a little "different", you have been accepted. Then you can say just about whatever you want and get away with it. Or you can sign in but don't post and say that you have been here a long time but you just don't post much? But if you come in with no medals on your chest and start talking crap, you will find yourself under the big two-ton DU tombstone...

I'm new to all this. I've read DU for two years before I joined. I thought I had something in common with people who oppose the war in Iraq and the gang that can't shoot straight ie bushmen et al.
See the medals I got were from a very unpopular war called Viet Nam. I didn't know that 3 or 4 hundred posts to gun nut pages counted for so much. Sorry. I'll try to do better.

These are some good tips, however.

Spelling is a big anal retentive streak for most of us. Also, "democrat party" is a big No-No.

As far as post count, ehh, not so much. I've been stuck in the "700 Club" for a couple of years, yet I remember when Kentuck first started posting.

Look at the profile icon and see what the user id is. That tells you how long someone has been here. I've seen people with 6,000 posts who've been here 2 months.

Anyway, thank you for your service in Vietnam, despite everything else that went with it, political and otherwise. Serving your country is a great thing, even if our leaders abuse it.

But I did investigate a bit before I signed on. I needed an outlet for my writing. At first, I used to write a bit for the front page. Tried to be a moderator in the early days. I remember the celebration when we first broke 10,000 members. Now we are about to break 100,000 in the next couple of weeks, probably. Don'tBlameMe has been here a long time so it's not just about post counts. It's what you have in your heads and in your hearts. Not everyone can be a DUer... :)

This is one of the few things that I have to wonder about. I remember when I used to spy on a TV board with people I couldn't stand, but the sheer nastiness there kind of made me give it up after awhile. I always thought "know thy enemy" was a good strategy, but when you pretty much hate everything they stand for, how the fuck can you keep it up, day after day, lying and pretending to be one of them? I couldn't do it! On that TV board, one of the founders was a lunatic who believed that women were subservient to men, and I finally had to tell him to go fuck himself because everything he said was degrading and creepy. That's why I wonder how freepers could even try to infiltrate DU, because they are so contemptuous of everything we stand for.

In the original Star Trek, the episode of our intrepid space explorers where they switched universes with their polar opposites (Mirror, Mirror) made a point that it was easier for our crew members to pretend to be uncivilized than for the opposites to pretend to be civilized. I kind of think of that, where the freepers still haven't figured out how to be civilized, and we can pull off being not so civilized a lot more handily.

But then, I think of my own situation with the TV board, and realize that you can do it for awhile, but a long term deception is very difficult to pull off.
