Actually I am against killing anything. But I think killing Saddam is barbaric and not very enlightened. Like the whole idea of going in there with war in the first place. He should be jailed for life if necessary

State sanctioned murder is murder. Period. Shouldn't we have become more evolved by now?

Saddam's injustices were followed by Bush's injustices. New boss is the same as the old boss.

13. I just can't see how it's morally possible to claim murder is wrong and state murder is OK.
On the spectrum of cold-blooded, captial 'punishment' is the coldest.

17. another reason why capital punishment is stupid ...
it makes more sense to keep him alive in prison, to live out the rest of his miserable life behind bars, never to be free again. That's worse than death.

If he's sentenced to death, he'll go to the gallows fantasizing about the 72 virgins waiting for him in heaven.

29. from your view it may be- from their view we sure must look
pretty frickin sick ...

What is the big news? a 93yr old non-elected president died of natural causes-

While today, in this 'rich' 'developed' 'enlightened' country a person dies from suicide every 18minutes- people all over this country are denied adequate food, shelter and housing while 'brokers' in NY try to figure out how to spend their 12,000,000 dollar bonus'- (apart from their salary- this is simply a 'bonus')

We will 'import' democracy to Iraq- but deny it for our own citizens-

We shop till we drop, and bitch and moan about the lines for 'returns' while in Iraq, getting through the day alive is reason to be ...'grateful'?

They may not have our 'technology'- but we sure have lost sight of what is truly important-
What is barbaric any-way?

no flames Disturbed,

tears, bile, and shame- but no flames-

But they're "barbaric". :eyes:

21. Yes but once he is gone, the insurgency will wither
we are in the last throes already. I expect we will see a decline in violence just like we did when his sons were killed and when he was captured and when Zarqawi was killed and when elections happened and and and and....

27. I doubt that. I hope you are right, but I don't agree.
The insurgency is *apparently* religious. Saddam was a secular leader. I don't think we will see a lessening of the violence. I fear we may see an increase.

22. The thing about capital punishment
is that it has to ask the question - what is best for society?
For some criminals, there is no earthly way to see justice done. If there was - what would that make us if we did it? Criminal ourselves.

For all of the executions that I have been aware of in my life, they have resulted in anti-climax, an emptiness that is something WE have lost, not the criminal.

Revenge? Closure? No - those are just words. Society at large is the loser in these state sanctioned murders no matter what country they occur.

26. The Death Penalty has been debated often here.
I feel that it is disgusting and barbaric.

Punishment, a deterrent, justice, closure, protection of society etc. are not valid reasons.

It is simply barbaric, cold hearted revenge.

32. I think it amounts to murder. That was not a legitimate court but
a kangaroo court through their puppet government that was created by us.He should have been tried in the Hague. Why aren't the free world objecting to this? Or have they and we just don't hear about it?

34. International courts are courts of LAST resort, not alternatives to national courts.
I'm not aware of any interntational court or law that displaces an existing national legal system.

Pity ... since it's as unlikely that Bush/Cheney will face ANYTHING that comes close to justice as it is that Saddam has been treated justly.

35. Yes, but there is no nation there after we destroyed their government
with the invasion and occupation. This was no different than the Nazis occuping Poland, disposing of their leaders and replacing them with their own lackeys. The puppet government we have set up is not legitimate IMHO. It's not the one that the Iraqi people elected post Saddam. It's the one that BushCo wanted in place. Therefore the Hague would have to be a last resort.IMHO This is what was done with Milosevic in Serbia because there was no other legitimate government to try him.

The only way Bush and Cheney will get a complaint heard in the Hague would be if Iraq as a sovereign nation eventually petitions them to try them for war crimes. If the Hague agrees, there is still that problem of getting them there. I'm sure our government would not extradite them.

Look who USA keeps company with; Iran. Iraq. China. Uzbekistan.

And the irony of the US calling such nations "uncivilized" and "barbaric".
