The "OMG! A President has died. Let's all sing his praises regardless of what he did in office because it's just respectful to honor a President, as we have been taught since childhood" thinking just didn't take hold with me.

24. I'm not a fan of Ford
I'm not particularly saddened by the deaths of either of them. James Brown had great talent, but was terrible to his family. And wife beaters belong in prison too. Ford was a mediocre (at best) president who made a very very bad choice - really he was just a party hack wasn't he? But he was good to his family. So they both had a positive side and a negative side. And they both died as old men. And they'd both accomplished what they wanted to I suppose.

Both men completed their lives. For better or worse, they were able to do their life's work and make their contribution.

I am sadden and enraged by the death of Nathan Given, Th1onein's nephew. He never had his chance. He is a hope denied, a dream never fulfilled. He was murdered and we were robbed.

15. Polls like this will no doubt bring up the worst about James Brown because
it's only fair to Ford in this poll to point out that The Godfather of Soul is no angel either. Brown had a history of domestic violence, among other things. Wife beating is just plain inexcusable. Brown's record, when it comes to his ladies, is not good. He was even charged once with aggravated assault and intent to murder his wife. As recent as 2004, he was arrested for domestic violence. Sorry to be such a downer on this, but that's just the way it is.

Just the same, I have to admit that Brown's death makes me sadder, but that's because of my love for rock and roll and his influence in the beginning of it all. My love for music is more influential upon me, in this particular poll, than my indifference toward Gerald Ford. May they both RIP, though.

23. Entertainer vs President
Easy decision. Entertainers are over paid, hyped nothings in most cases. There are notable exceptions such as Bono however. In both cases, too many people are blowing smoke up their a$$es for them to have a proper perspective on life. This is especially so for entertainers.

President Ford had much more impact to my life then a singer/entertainer whose music I didn't care for. HE came across as an ordinary man put in the highest job in the country. I was mad as H for him pardoning Nixon but understood that he needed to pour oil on the water to calm the country down.

Reading his embargoed interviewed on the Iraq war, Kissinger, Channey, etc. makes me like him even more.

Edited on Thu Dec-28-06 02:12 PM by mtnsnake
First of all, I didn't say my people are any better than your people. I don't claim any performers from any time period as "my own".

Secondly, if you don't think there's a difference between the early days of rock and today's days....of what it takes to make a huge name for yourself...then I'd suggest you rent the nearest time machine and go and see for yourself. In the older days, for the most part, you didn't make it big unless you had talent. Today, there are plenty of cases where talent doesn't even factor into the occasion. Don't get me wrong, there is some great talent out there today, too, but there are just as many big name "entertainers" today who have zero talent but a great body and face, along with rich agents pushing them along.

As far as what I said in the other post, I said "if you're only talking about TODAY'S overhyped nothings, like Brittany and things like boybands....". I didn't say EVERYONE. Reading comprehension is a wonderful thing.

49. I didn't mention "my" people
I have a few years on me. I have been in involved in the music business for close to 30 years and know what it takes to make it in the business and not make it in the business.

I also forget that people tend to think in linear thoughts when they talk about music. It's all not rock, so I don't know where you are going with that. You think James Brown was rock? Or Britney Spears for that matter?

There is a reason why you think that a lot of people today have less talent than people in the "good ol' days", it's because you don't hear of the people from the "good ol' days" anymore that made it on mediocre talent. It's nice to live in a la la land of what you think, but there were plenty of people in the early days that weren't all that talented compared to many others. They had hits because of their looks and their managers.

You honestly think that people like Ricky Nelson, Bobby Vinton, LuLu, Bobby Sherman, Leif Garret, Nancy Sinatra and 100,000s of others made it big on pure raw talent and it had nothing to do with their looks?

Just a little uppity sounding.

I haven't been in the business all my life, other than playing in a band for 10 years a long time ago, but I've been into music in a big way all my life.

I have a few years on me. I have been in involved in the music business for close to 30 years and know what it takes to make it in the business and not make it in the business....I also forget that people tend to think in linear thoughts when they talk about music. I hope you'll excuse me for not being the such an elite music person as you are.

Anyway, I'm not going to argue over music. We'll just both end up nitpicking over something we both love. I'm glad you have a big interest in music, though.

he stopped riots by singing after MLK was killed. his concerts brought white and black people together in the 1960's. he single-handedly is responsible for multiple genres of music, among them hip hop being the most popular genre in the entire country.

"Suggesting this is not the time to piss on him" doesn't mean in any way, shape, or form that I would ever condone Ford's pardon of Nixon. I was old enough when Nixon got pardoned to know that it was one of the most disappointing days politically that this nation has ever endored.

Anyway, it's no biggie.

If you had spent the past decade posting daily on how Ford was evil for his single act, then you might have a case. But all this celebratory bashing of a man who's been gone for less than 36 hours is disgusting.

The handful of us who find this behavior hideous will not silence the hundreds of DUers who can't even wait even two days to post their obits of hate, but we are telling the truth. This kind of behavior borders on uncivilized.

37. Posting facts is hate???
I have spoken out against Ford since he pardoned Tricky Dick. My sister even called me yesterday because she thought of me as soon as she heard Ford was dead. She knows how much I disrespected him. Remembering the one thing he did that forgave an evil evil man from being punished is far from uncivilized. Stating facts is not uncivilized. Ignoring them is delusional.

Ths handful of DUers who find this behavior hideous are definitely in the minority here. Thank gawd.

I was not posting here at DU when Reagan died. I strongly disliked Reagan, and the loud mourning and tearing of the hair by the adoring righties was enough to make me vomit. However, I waited until the man was in the ground before I cut loose.

It's called manners. Respect. Civility. You (collectively) need some serious training in how to behave like human beings.

Be assured that whenever you join the ranks of the knuckledraggers who urinate on the recently dead, I will be here to bathe you in well-deserved scathing criticism.
