We Dare Not Speak Its Name
WE DARE NOT SPEAK ITS NAME
By Pastor Rich Lang

So when do we use the word? When do we actually say it? When do we, as clergy, take up the ministry of Ezekiel, and warn our people of that which is coming (Ezekiel 33:1-9)?

So far we have refused to say the word. So far we have not been so bold as to take up Ezekiel’s ministry. Perhaps we are afraid that even if we sounded the alarm our people wouldn’t listen nor would they understand (Isaiah 6). And so, because of our silence, our people are assaulted by fears and suspicions drifting into sleep, moving step by inevitable step into the abyss traveled by all other empires before ours (Revelation 18).

The signs are clearly all around us. The mission and purpose of the United States is now that of a permanent war economy patrolling the globe and exterminating the infidels (1 Samuel 8). The office of the president, with the acquiescence of the Congress, is fast becoming the office of a supreme leader who can change law through “signing statements” and extinguish law through an assumption of war powers. We have become a nation that practices torture. We have become a nation that targets and kills civilians. We have become a nation that disappears people. We imprison people without trial. We monitor what we say, who we say it to, when we say it, where we say it. All of this in the name of freedom and all of this disguised as justice. All of this covered with the silence and blessing of the clergy who will not blow the trumpet.

The signs are clearly all around us. We have students spying on their professors. We have government agencies spying on us. We have our computer transactions monitored. We have our children accosted by military recruiters at school, through the mail, through the media, at the mall. Meanwhile the price of war rises into the multiple billions even as spending cuts slice through the poor and the working class. But, from the pulpit, we dare not speak its name: this name that has become the reality of our time.

Within the Church there is an irreconcilable divergence emerging (1 John 2:18-19). At its extremes we see the birth of Patriot Pastors in Ohio even as liberal churches become targets for IRS investigations. We see Justice Sundays and the growth of theocratic nationalism even as more are jailed because of their faith-based resistance to the further production of war. From the pulpits of the nation the Sermon on the Mount, christian identification with the poor, the declaration to love our enemies are all replaced with strategies of church growth or manipulations to infiltrate political parties. Congregations insist that clergy dare not speak its name. Congregations insist that clergy stay embedded in their role as chaplain and golf partner. They insist that clergy provide comfort and offer therapeutic guidance. And clergy, with paycheck in hand, and a desire for career advancement in heart, oblige their congregations with false words of “peace, peace” (Jeremiah 8).

But when does it get said? When do we clergy preach ISamuel 8, Isaiah 6, Jeremiah 8, Ezekiel 33, 1 John 2, Revelation 18? When do we prepare our people for the next act of terrorism and the next seizure of power? When do we clergy declare that allegiance to a military security state committed to permanent war is idolatry? When do we cease our support for the regime that sends troops out to oppress, dominate and die while it chants the empty slogan "support our troops?”

When, in other words, will clergy name the disease that is our present reality? When do we speak of it from the pulpit? What are we waiting for? What other signs do we need? Are we waiting for the inevitable arrests of dissidents? Are we waiting for the next invasion, and then the next? Are we waiting for further heresy trials, further church harassment, further cultural friction? Are we waiting until the waters of the coming economic flood finally bubble up under our own chins? When do we dare blow the trumpet and warn our people? When do we dare cast aside the comforts of popularity, prosperity, and privilege so that we finally speak its name? And having spoken it from the pulpit, from the Bible study, from out of each pastoral visit we make, having spoken the Word then perhaps we can lead our people in doing that which only the Church can do: casting out the demon while repenting for the sin of this republic now turned empire. Just like Jesus encountering the man in the tombs, we must begin this exorcism by naming its name: some might call it militarism but I think it is better understood as fascism (Mark 5).

5. Get thee to the Religion Forum.
Because I just don't care.

The SIGNS! THE signs! See here, it says in Nostradamus that Kennedy would be assassinated! In Ezekiel it says there were flying saucers!

Written by mystics and politicians over a period of centuries for who-knows what purpose, but probably to control the population to keep the elite in power.

This collection of books makes no more sense now than hieroglyphs on the tombs of dead Pharaohs, you know the god-kings.

It had nothing to do with your reflexive ramblings it was in fact a call to very earthbound action from citizens with conscience of all stripes.

We should all care.

I'm an atheist.

7. Freedom and justice, superstitions?
If we're fighting for freedom of thought, more militant evangelism -- even ostensibly freethinking militant evangelism -- isn't going to help much.

Saucers. The Blood o' the Lamb. Tom Cruise and His Magic Meter. Fascism. We can survive the first three indefinitely; we shouldn't countenance the fourth for another moment. Because even if we got rid of every trace of religion and superstition, right down to Bible Superhero Action Figures and the smilin' mug of the Dalai Lama, when fascism comes along, it will use whatever it can find, even if it has to paint a Hitler 'stache on Carl Sagan and command prayers to Richard Dawkins.

Fascism has done similar, and worse, before. Communism was its Grand Experiment with atheism, and it succeeded longer than most other Grand Fascistic Experiments. It should warn us that everything is pervertable -- except the minds of those who jealously guard their freedom.

Evil is as evil does. I'll throw my lot in with anti-Fascist freethinkers -- as well as religionists like the Jubilee Christians, the Lubavitcher Jews, the Buddhists of Brother Gyatso Tenzin's bent, and anti-war/anti-fascist mystics like Whit Strieber or Shirley MacLaine. Time and reason will certainly win out against the errors of superstition; but the mindless cancer of Fascism compels our immediate, desperate, attention.

"Good Shepherds" (pastors, preachers, priests, spiritual leaders, etc.) to start taking care of their "Flocks" (sheeple) and lead them away from the danger and evil that awaits them when they blindly graze in the pastures of darkness (FASCISM). It is your duty and calling to protect these people who have entrusted their very souls to the future you are selling them. What are the rest of us supposed to do with these people if you don't lead them out of danger? We're gonna be stuck with millions of lost, deluded souls who will think they have ended up in Hell. Fascism is Hell, Hell is Fascism... SAVE YOUR SHEEPLE!

20. Since this issue goes back such a long time,
can we conclude that "fascism" (for lack of a better word) is the over-arching theme of human history - that the Big Problem of mankind is that there be predators among us, human predators, highly motivated unscrupulous mofos who will do anything they think they can get away with to enrich and empower themselves at the expense of the rest of us, manifesting as criminals in high places, robber barons, a political-corporate mafia?

28. From the Yurica Report (if I remember correctly)
George Bush and the Rise of Christian Fascism
by Rev. Rich Lang
Since December 2000 the Rev. Rich Lang writes, "we have
witnessed and have been unable to prevent the emergence
of an Imperial Presidency that has the unrestricted power
to declare war against any country he chooses."
What we need is a movement of spiritual justice.

A Pastoral Letter to the President
May 8, 2002
By Rev. Rich Lang

Dear President Bush,

When you were running for office you stated that Jesus Christ was your favorite philosopher. You have made a point of proclaiming your Christian faith. You have put time and energy in an attempt to link Church mission with state social security. You have, particularly since 9/11, continually preached God Bless America on almost every public occasion. As a Pastor and fellow United Methodist I need to ask you: "Do you know what the values and vision of Jesus are?"

I ask the question because I am baffled and confused by your behavior. You claim Christ but act like Caesar. There is blood all over your hands with the promise of even more blood to come. You sit atop the nations like the Biblical Whore of Babylon openly fornicating with the military men of might, their corporate sponsors, their nuclear madness, and their insatiable hunger for global armament. Is this how you learned Christ?

You claim the benevolence of your Administration toward the rest of the world. But the treaties you make continue to be laced with a tightened rope around the neck of the poor. Is this how you learned to "forgive our debtors"? Is it really Christ-like to insist on cuts in life-supporting infrastructure while increasing military budgets and allowing the plunder of nations to accrue to a very small financial elite? Have you not been taught that Jesus was crucified by these same Principalities and Powers?

(snip)

I am troubled by your spirit George. You claim you are of the Sustainer of Life but you practice the terror of Death. You are spreading the war. Afghanistan is only the beginning. Military presence crops up worldwide. You bait us with Iraq and shield what you are doing in Columbia. You lay the groundwork for disrupting Venezuela, Brazil and Argentina. You allow the dogs of capitalism to sink their teeth into the battered body of a raped Central America. The buck stops on your desk George: is this what Jesus would do?

The Spirit of Death rises and nations tremble. We the people of the United States tremble. We discover how truly powerless we have become. Our military budget grows to obscene levels bankrupting the social infrastructure from which our security and freedom rise. We see basic medical care costs increase even as more and more Americans find themselves without health care. We see environmental treaties subverted, ignored and disappeared even as Mother Earth signals increasing distress. Labor rights are made secondary to the rights of Corporations resulting in wage reductions and growing financial insecurity. Homelessness exposes itself through tented cities. Education becomes the victim of budget knife cuts. A few benefit but the groan of the masses is growing. Whose side are you on George?

(snip)

Seek Christ first,

Rev. Rich Lang
Pastor
Trinity United Methodist Church
