TOKYO (AFP) - Former US president George H.W. Bush hailed his friendship in retirement with former rival Bill Clinton, but vowed to put up a fight if Hillary Clinton runs for the White House.

If Senator Clinton runs in 2008, "I'll be back on the other side and I will be trying to beat the hell out of her if possibly I can," he said with a grin. "So that's the American politics."

We could possibly keep each other company for a while on this line: there is certainly a ruling class, and President and Senator Clinton are part of it. The factional divisions within this class, however, do run very deep, and which faction people belong to matters. Being members by dint of striving to co-option, rather than birth, these two Democrats are part of a faction that recognizes the self interest of the rulers is best served in the long run by the welfare of the people at large, rather than by some among the rulers grabbing the most they possibly can in a devil take the hind-most Social Darwinist jungle. The oldest split within the left is between those who feel that revolution must always be the foremost goal, and that where revolutionary conditions do not exist the business of the left is to create them, and those who feel that improving the lot of the people must always be the foremost goal, and whatever tool is most readily to hand should be used to secure this, and that in conditions of liberal democracy, the best tool ready to hand is exploitation and eventual co-option of the existing political structure.

Our only difference here, it seems to me, is that I feel less certainty about which faction the Clintons belong to.

Otherwise, most of what you have to say I have said myself at one time or another.

Ironically, I almost added another paragraph to my post above about the fact that the Democrats, by in large, represent that part of the Ruling Class which sees its interests better served by serving some of the interests of the masses. It's something I've posted often over the years -- and, for that matter, something I learned at my father's knee many decades ago.

I'm not a revolutionary leftist, as far as I know. All I've ever endeavored to do is just wake people up as best I can. I just want people to stretch their minds and their perceptions. I figure that's the best way to shift the paradigm. I think that's more evolution than revolution.

The biggest chains that need to be thrown off are our mental chains. First we have to recognize that the chains exist, and then find out how it is we came to be enchained. The rest proceeds organically from there, hopefully.
