Proposed congressional earmark moratorium includes Fort Campbell projects

A proposed moratorium on special interest spending by Congress could mean losing several Fort Campbell projects.

The incoming chairmen of the appropriations committees in the House and Senate with approval of Democratic congressional leaders say they will put a one-year moratorium on the controversial practice of targeting funds for special-interest projects in spending bills.

Local projects at risk include losing about $160 million for Fort Campbell targeted for barracks, a warrior rehabilitation center, and a storage facility for unmanned drones.

We are going to do everything within our power, through our delegation to stop this if we can, said James Chavez, president of the Clarksville Montgomery Economic Development Council, in a written statement. While these projects may be considered special earmarks in Congress, they are immediate needs for the men and women serving at Fort Campbell.
