a liberal democracy.
If my party hasn't finished all its Christmas shopping yet, that's what I want for Christmas this year. Times have been hard these past six years, and it would mean so much to young citizens like me, who've only had an oligarchy to live under for most of our lives. But like Ebenezer Scrooge, we know that the Christmas spirit can live all year long, and it doesn't have to be December 25th to give and receive gifts.
We can't stop with one day of liberal democracy, or even twelve days. We need every day for at least the next twelve months to be filled with gifts of liberal democracy. From Senator Dorgan, the gifts of fairer trade and a more democratic workplace. From Barbara Boxer, Al Gore, and Jerry McNerney, the gifts of cleaner air and water. From John Conyers and Louise Slaughter, transparent government. From Russ Feingold, John Kerry, Carl Levin, and others, an end to the war in Iraq.
Meanwhile, I will be giving myself two gifts. The first is the gift of hope. For the first time in a long time, my government will represent me again. The second is a promise, that I will make the most of this long-awaited opportunity. Whatever else happens, I will take time out of every day to be a citizen, and exercise all the responsibilities and rights therein, from educating myself about what my government is up to, to letting my representatives know what I think of their latest doings.
Every American should give themselves those two gifts.
