The situation has gotten even more sticky involving certain board members sharing confidential personnel info with other staff. Anyone here can refer me to a good lawyer in Florida?

11. nice piece on the egregious Halperin....
have you seen Eric Boehlert's book on the media, in which he takes Halperin, and The Note, to task?

or his Media Matters review of that piece of toilet paper he and the Washpost guy wrote?

4. Whoa.....
I read the other thread. Here is what I would do:

1) Take a sixty second break from the anger - the rage - an see for yourself how you really feel, and what harm has really been done you.

2) Look up a law firm, preferably one that deals with the workplace and employment - AND offers a one hour or so FREE consultation. The law firm will tell you very quickly if your case has merit.

5. Depends what the laws are
Now...HIPAA only pertains to healthcare personnel. You are aware of that correct?
You won't make headway going at it from that angle, but I would personally contact the American Disability Association.
You have to realize though, that only certain disabilities are covered.
You don't have a lawsuit against the company. At most, you have a lawsuit against the person who revealed the information so unless they have deep pockets, it may not be worth your expense.
Good luck!

9. My understanding is that HIPAA applies to those who
also manage health care information, but may not be directly involved in health care. I worked in the transcription department of a clinic and we were bound by HIPAA. If someone, who handles health care information, gave out this information, then HIPAA would apply.

22. Yes. You are correct.
Transcriptionists, billing, etc. are peripherally involved in healthcare and covered by HIPAA.
For example, if I, as a nurse, disclose information to another party, I am liable.
If you, as a transcriptionist, disclose information to another party, you are liable.
However, if Bob knows Bill who knows Joe tells someone something about you that you told someone else, HIPAA does not apply.

23. Without knowing specifically what gray is doing
and how this person came to know this information, it is hard to say.
However, generally speaking, if someone didn't sign a confidentiality statement, then privacy laws most likely aren't going to apply.

6. Good luck to you.
The person responsible has no excuse. HIPAA was specifically intended by Congress to prevent exactly this kind of use (now illegal misuse) of the information. It's so easy to misuse confidental information; HIPAA is at least an attempt to strike back at those who would take advantage.

8. I'm seeing a lawyer.
I was hired by the dysfunctional group lst night, turned down the other job at 10 am today, and then at 10:15 got a call from the first job that the shit hit the fan so now I'm out both jobs.

Went down to job number 1 site today and heard some shit that violates confidentiality laws, so I'm seeing a lawyer on Monday.

I'm still ripping pissed....even more so now.

14. Thanks, I don't usually do the lawyer route, but I am really going after them this time.
It's amazing how worthless, do nothings get to keep their jobs while people who take up their slack, cover their mistakes, and work more than they should get the shaft. I'm out for blood on this one.

13. Are you saying
that the improper disclosure cost you the job?

If you can show that, and link it to a big-money company, you might have something there.

15. Well, I'm saying that I turned down one job because the other agency
offered me a position last night and told me to come in today so we could talk about schedules, etc. After I turned down the other job, the job offer was recinded because the other person I was being hired to assist walked off the job and took her "family" of contractors with her. I was being hired to straightened out some shit that had been going on...I know it was all backdoor deals this other person was involved in.

so yes, I was hired for one job, turned down another based on that, and then told there was no job for the one I was hired for last night.
