Look up "Loose Cannon" and there's Ahmadinejad's picture...
In one fell stroke, Ahmadinejad has just made withdrawal from Iraq that much harder for Democrats.

Sometimes I wonder if he isn't the ultimate mole...

Idiot.

I'm no huge fan the big A but its long past time that we deal with other world leaders on some kind of diplomatic and equal footing. The cowboy diplomacy has gotten us nothing but death and we don't want any part of a war with Iran I assure you.

8. He is no loose cannon. He WANTS us in Iraq
It empowers him.

We are bankrupting ourselves, killing ourselves, and revealing our military capabilities.

They are sending in observers and small weapons and assisting in the defeat of the Americans.

We are forced to deal with him because we need help in Iraq.

He is NOT a loose cannon. He is shrewd. And don't forget, he was elected as a direct response to the Chimp. If the Chimp goes, so may he.

Make no mistake. Just like Bin Laden's tapes right before the election, these provocations are perfectly aware of our in-country politics. They WANT to trap us there to finish us off. And now that the Iranian president has spoken of the reasonable path out, you can be DAMNED sure no American leader wants a part of any of what he said.

Sort of like yelling fire in a theatre when your army is guarding all the exits.

11. You may be right, but it is not in Iran's interest...
If we went into Iraq with a legitimate international presence, then maybe Iran's influence in Iraq would be minimal. But, as it is, as soon as we leave, Iran's influence immediately fills the void.

So while Iran wanted us there, they now want us gone. Ahmadinejad's personal power may be another story.

12. WTF?!?
You can't possibly think that Ahmadinejad is some sort of friend to either the democrats or America, can you? I hope not, because all your doing (besides deluding yourself) is validating the wack-job America-hater stereotype perpetuated by Hannity, Savage, et al.

17. Juan Cole on Ahmadinejad's letter to Bush...
Edited on Wed Nov-29-06 06:26 PM by Junkdrawer

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wrote a letter to W., in which he insisted on Iran's right under the Non-Proliferation Treaty to conduct scientific research on uranium enrichment. The NPT does in fact allow such research, but it is Bush administration policy to abrogate that right and stop even civilian research programs that might lead to the closing of the fuel cycle. It is another big leap from such an ability to making a bomb.

Ahmadinejad is a crank, and some of what he says is either badly translated or makes no sense in the original. Both are possible. Le Monde has a translation (pdf). Persian text here.

In any case, his letter to Bush holds no prospect of reducing tensions. It should be remembered that then Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh angered Washington in the early 1950s by nationalizing Iranian petroleum. Eisenhower slapped sanctions on Iran and destroyed its economy. Washington at that time thought Mosaddegh was a pinko, though in fact he was a relatively conservative aristocrat. At the height of the crisis, Mosaddegh wrote a letter to Eisenhower, which was ignored. Ike had the CIA overthrow the elected, parliamentary government of Iran and install the Shah as a megalomaniacal dictator. So the tradition of letter-writing by Iranian leaders at times of tensions with Washington isn't replete with successes. Of course, the Iranians took revenge for the heavy-handed US interference with their form of government. They made an Islamic Revolution in 1978-79, and more recently elected Ahmadinejad. What Washington wouldn't do to have that nice Mr. Mosaddegh back.
