Snow - was supposed to be 2 inches, getting 8+ inches.
It's still snowing.

What do you think? Global warming or just beneficial coincidence to make it feel like the holidays?

I don't much like the wild weather from global warming - heat waves suck, but a little snow now and then isn't so bad. I like to watch it fall. Much more soothing than watching Bush or his minions lie on TV.

How can the world be a bad place when it's covered with the clean, fluffy white stuff? :P

As long as it doesn't turn into the snowy version of Noah's Ark! Which, if global warming gets really bad, might not be as impossible as it sounds...

Has anyone heard of any research being done on the effects of global warming on snowfall patterns?

1. It means the weather forcaster was off and probably a sudden
change in front brought more snow than was expected.

It was 70 at 3 a.m. Sunday morning (I was at a concert and ended up talking with people in Wicker Park until nearly 5...no one wanted to go home...) and it will be 66 tomorrow. Then 32 for a high on Friday, which we will promptly send your way for the weekend.

17. Are they calling for snow in Chicago? I'm flying up for the day
on Friday. Just don't want to be delayed or I'll miss most of the meeting.

I have to go out and buy buttons for my heavy coat, which I only wear 1-2x/year down here in Texas, lol. :-)

What really cracks me up about that deal is it really hides nothing... anyone who really wanted to track that person down could lift their IP address from their post and then find the physical address from where it eminates...

:)

I used to know a real bitch who LOVED to do that to people on another message board! She even got one poster fired from her job by posting her business name and address. I'd never go that far... but it's sometimes a hoot to know I can! Especially when people THINK they are being soooo secretive! hahahaha!

55. Locks are to keep honest people honest. Does that mean you do not lock your door?
Yes, there are people online who can find out anything about you, but I notice that the vast majority of people who post here and on other message boards do not use their real names, and for very good reason. There are a lot of nut cases out there, so the more personal information you with hold, probably the better. As for myself, here at DU the most important thing for you to know about me is that I am a life-long Democrat who has voted for, worked for, and given money to Democratic candidates. You don't NEED to know anything else, but for a point of reference I would add that I am from Wisconsin. Online, the less information about yourself which you volunteer, the better off you will be. DU has 98,000+ members and my guess is that not all of them are nice people and there are certainly some who I would not trust with a dog I liked.

74. Yes, I read your posts.
I take your point that nobody is totally safe, but not everybody is going to go the extra mile to find out everything. A screen name is enough to stop most people. A screen name and a location makes it easier. Your real name makes it easier yet and add to that your location as well as other personal information makes it even easier. So you at least lock the door knowing that if somebody is determined to get in, they probably can. The alternative probably is to never post at all. I have seen private people online post their real name as well as their address and phone number. That's the equivalent to leaving the door open with a sign saying "come on in".

75. With all those precautions
Someone can still read your IP address and find where you live... that's my point. The risk is not in what you show in your profile, but by virtue of the fact you are posting on the Internets at all. The posting is where the danger lies.

78. Not all "someones" will go to the bother of reading and pursuing your ip address.
That is all I am saying. The more you show in your profile, thinking it is totally innocent, the more information you give. It is easier to get into my house if I leave the door open or unlocked. Not everyone would bother to bust down the door or pick the lock. I would choose to give the absolute minimum in my profile and other than here I never give one at all. Precautions just make it more difficult for the bad guys or the nosy.

83. Anyone who wants in your house, locked or not
Or wants to find your identity on the internets, is going to do it. Keeping your profile locked only serves to make you look suspicious. The bad guys have all the right toys. I knew a woman once who actually got someone fired because she posted the other woman's IP address, business name and business address simply by very easily, without much work at all, lifting the IP address. She is a real bitch. It's no trouble to do it once you understand how it works... not hard at all... in fact, anyone who really wants to do it isn't even going to bother with your profile.

You don't need to pick the lock when you have a key in your hand.

98. Your profile, like everything else you put online, can be a lie.
That's right, what a novel concept! People lie online! I can SAY I am a Democrat, but there is no way you can know. I can SAY I am from Wisconsin, but how do you know? Profiles, can mean nothing. I could care less who considers my profile or lack of one to be suspicious because here there are enough people who are suspicious if you disagree with what they say or believe. I am not seeking to please anyone here or to gain their approval.

Concerning this exchange, this is a clear case of failure to communicate. Somebody can always find out more about you online than you want known and somebody can always get into your house if they want to do it. I see no reason to make it easier to do in either of those cases. I really thought that it was a simple comparison, but evidently it is not clear to you.

Please excuse me while I disable my profile. My only obligation here at DU is to obey the rules and there is no rule that says you must have a profile. I will be judged by what I actually "say" and not by what I "claim" is true about me. People can think or suspect whatever they like because they usually do, and not for the better. If I posted to please everyone, I wouldn't have much interesting or new to say as I just "amen" the popular opinion of the day, and there always is one.

There was an ASPCA l-o-n-g before there was any children's advocacy.

And it continues.... much more advocacy for animals. Just think of the animal rescues... don't have that for people!!

I was very tempted to really raise a ruckus where I am (CO), because there were all kinds of efforts, this far away, to rescue and foster animals from Katrina, yet homeless people here are completely forgotten!

But I know people who do. And if you would bother to read a little, you would see I'm right.

All message boards record IP addresses. If you don't think there's a way to hack into that, you are pretty naive.

There are proxy addresses that used to be able to mask... but there's ways around that now as well.

That's post #5 and I replied to post #4 ... the latest one in the thread when I read it. Contary to what some may think, it takes time (about 5 minutes in this case) to read a thread and compose a reply - more for some than others. Some folks have dial-up or ISDN or low-speed cable connections. Some folks have distractions (phone calls, etc.) when posting.

Nonetheless, the point is a valid one even if minor. Most "pet peeves" are minor and hardly worth playing rescuer on a white horse. For some self-indulged bird-brain to condescending suggest I can't read the word 'utah' in the OM (where it doesn't exist) is arrogant thread-copping on steroids.

and I can't wait to get back. I'm a native. But seriously folks, global warming isn't all just about getting more summery. It has to do with the temp of the sea currents , and how that effects the farenheit. A tipping point(stalling the movement of the oceans) could easily frost us( to put it mildly) all over, and then Texas might be more like Minnesota at best! THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW was not just imagination.

I tend to lean towards natural cyclical weather patterns.

This is an El Niño year. So, those of us in New Mexico can probably look forward to a decent snowfall after last year's disaster and those in the southeast might have to dodge ice storms again.

80. Of course
Global warming exists. Global cooling exists as well.

As for my opinion on the causes, the jury is still out for me on whether or not man is causing cataclysmic changes to the planet. Weather forecasting is an imperfect science. They can't predict the weather in Northern New Mexico with any accuracy unless there is no moisture and no winds. Our forecasts in the monsoon season and winters literally change by the hour yet I'm supposed to accept on faith computer predictions of gloom and doom for the future? And how about the predictions for the massive hurricane season we were supposed to receive this year?

I'm a skeptic and I will remain so until we can come up with a system to accurately predict what's going to happen in the long term. We are not there yet.

I haven't been able to participate in my favorite winter sport of watching the big wheeled trucks drive into ditches. :sarcasm:

19. Yeah, but
they have to compete with the SUVs with drivers from the "I know how to drive in the Snow" northeast that blast down the hills and into ditches when they realize there's a hell of a lot more ice on the roads than snow. ;)

40. The first measurable snow is always a pain
People forget how to drive in it, they have to relearn what to do. We're expecting precip here in nwmo, the trouble is it looks like it has a better chance of being an ice storm.
I hate ice, all bets are off, even the best drivers lose control, and the morans seem to lose brain power in bad conditions.

67. black ice is a real bite here --
especially with the morons who have their sprinklers on a timer and forget to turn them OFF when the weather calls for freezing temperatures. One of the main roads just south of us turned into a very nasty skating rink last year.

23. LOL! Is that after 1 or 2 snowflakes?
I've lived in sunny areas before, and a little dab of snow always makes folks in sunny states go crazy. That's probably why I love the stuff so much now. I didn't have to spend endless amounts of time in it over the years, so it still has it's mystery.

But drat, no trucks in ditches here...

65. my very first winter here
had approximately 2 or 3 inches on the ground. We lived in a complex with curvy roads and a lake in the center of the complex.

We brought out lawn chairs, sat on our back porch with our coffee, and made bets as to who would hit the lake first. It was a very enjoyable day

69. LOL! That's so funny, and so true. I lived many years in
the sunny states, and was scared to death to drive in the snow when I moved here. But I find it easier to drive in than I thought it would be. Go figure. Ice is another story. Lot's of ice in Texas, shuts the whole place down. But folks here are pretty quick to salt the roads and do whatnot to keep the ice under control on the roads. So driving in the snow in kinda fun.

20. No snow in Ohio!!
Not snowing here but I wish it was. I love the snow!!!

I'm still undecided on global warming. I used to believe it but now I'm not so sure. There are too many arguements on each side. It is possible that the earth is going through one of its climate cycles that it makes. On the other side, we sure don't do anything to help with all of our pollution.

And when it snowed, they would deny the whole thing and say we were anti-American for bringing it up!

22. Snow is predicted for central NM
over the next couple of days. Most of it will fall on the Rockies, where it belongs.

Snow here is great. It falls, it looks pretty, and it's pretty much gone from paved surfaces within a couple of hours.

It's very rare that it sticks enough to shovel.

34. Well, I'm not arguing against global warming, but...
that is "weather," not "climate."

The NOAA is constantly doing research on all different types of weather in the US, looking for trends. A poke around their website can lead to days on end of research.

You can cut a long swath, and if it ain't deep, nothing but a bunch of complaints about THAT instead of everything else.

But you're right. Even joking about a long scratch isn't really funny. I'm sorry.

76. Global warming predictions of climate changes
lean toward us seeing extremes in the climate. Like your 8 inches instead of 2.

Like record highs followed by steep plunges in the days afterward, followed by record highs.

We won't see record lows again except in extreme cases, as the climate overall is warming.

As the balance betweeen lows and highs is battered by GW extreme patterns will emerge.

81. 75 in Dallas Today..snow/ice/20's expected on Thursday
Guess I should be used to Texas' weather NON-patterns by now but as I was driving around w/ my windows down in 75 degrees/sunny weather today I found it hard to start thinking about getting my window ice scaper handy for the ice storm that is due to blow into town in 2 days!

Then I get to watch the fools who still choose to drive to the top layer of our 5 story high overpasses, get stuck on the ice, and frantically call 911 to be rescued! Convinced these are the same spring time fools that drive right past our "high water-do not enter" signs in the springtime and need rescuing.
