The possibility of a happy thought
I was lying in bed this morning and it struck me, I mean I was really surprised by this, I couldn't come up with a 'happy' thought. No image or memory was not tinged by a sense of despair or loss. It wasn't depression. I am completely aware that I'm not at all depressed. I'm still filled with motivation and curiosity about the world. But the state of things in the world is so truly horrible that having a good or happy thought seemed like a narcissistic joke, the act of an imbecile. I have a treasure trove of good memories but when I access them I relive them in the context of a dying world. Many involve nature and I realize, the nature I knew will be no more. Many involve love and I realize the love I knew and know, the possibility of two people in a joyous adventure together, now amounts to just sticking your head in the sand. Films and television constantly tell us that the central question of our lives is finding our true loves. If that was ever true, it certainly isn't now. The central question is: what the hell are we going to about the dying planet!? I was listening to the radio later and the host, a very nice host, was asking people to phone in and talk about how they were taking advantage of this 'unusual warm spell' we're having. She wanted people to phone in and talk about the extra golf games they're playing, or the surprise blooms they're finding in the garden. That summed it up for me. This warm weather is a likely sign of potentially catastrophic climate change and here people were, good people, smart people, loving people, sharing it as a little blessing from the universe.

______________

Yes I know, "Stop whining and go and do something about it!" Self-indulgent rant over.

1. just read an article on the subject
give the exercise a try for a week or two, see if it helps.

NEW YORK - As a motivational speaker and executive coach, Caroline Adams Miller knows a few things about using mental exercises to achieve goals. But last year, one exercise she was asked to try took her by surprise.

Every night, she was to think of three good things that happened that day and analyze why they occurred. That was supposed to increase her overall happiness.
