What's all this about a draft?
At dinner last night my mom was telling me something about a draft maybe happening again, and us moving to Canada if said draft happens. But I was reading here and noticed some people are calling it a bluff? Can someone give me the low down on all of this? Is all this election stuff getting to Bush's head?

1. "Well, close the door!"
"Emily, they are talking about the MILITARY draft."

"Oh. Never mind."

2. Oh are you in for a shock.
The person who has talked of renewing the draft is Representative Charles Rangel (D), incoming Chairman of the Ways and Means committee. He wants to spark a debate, scare people, make them think, on the grounds that if there was a draft with no exceptions, wars of choice would end VERY quickly. And if they don't, the pain will be shared more evenly.

A good many DU'ers are valiantly defending the idea as a badly needed means to wake up the American people. I view it as political suicide. Others may disagree.

4. There's a lot of us who think it's political suicide here on DU.

5. Rangel's playing rope-a-dope with suburbanites
who don't think the war can possibly come for their children and affect their lifestyles.

Of course, his support for it in Congress has doubled: from two to four.

This is accomplishing two things: waking up the apathetic and ensuring Stupid won't propose a draft. If a Democrat came up with it, he'll never do it.
