The following is a letter sent to all the Sunday morning talk shows and also to editors of the NewYorkTimes and Washington Post:

Senator John McCain very clearly stated that if additional troops aren't sent into Iraq, the war will be unwinnable, and if that becomes the case, McCain said, he "cannot" ask soldiers to return to Iraq. This would be "immoral," he says.

Okay, then — if President Bush decides against troop increases, will McCain then stop supporting the continued troop presence there and call for withdrawal? Will you the media press him on this point? Also, if McCain does continue to support the U.S. troops staying in Iraq — which by his own lights would be "immoral" — will reporters and commentators like yourself note the glaring contradiction?

It seems like some people on the left hate him because he's not left enough,and some people on the right hate him because he's not right enough.A lot of right wingers say they won't vote for him and say he caters to the left too often,and won't get the republican nomination.They say the same thing about Guilliani,that he's also too moderate.I think Bush was unwise to pick Cheney as his running mate,because of his health and low-popularity,and knowing he might not be able to run after him.So who does the right have for 2008?

I say McCain,and to tell you the truth I hope they do.Because if he does win it won't be as bad as someone much more to the right.But I think we should get someone up there who can win.What happened to Joe Biden?

Edwards could win all by himself,with a running mate for vice,but he just seems really young.A lot of people vote on looks though.:dilemma:

7. It may behoove you to do some research on McCain

He in no way would make a good anything.......let alone President...

8. I dunno - looking at McCain's record, it's pretty hard to imagine

anyone much further to the right actually having a realistic chance. Only R primary candidates in the past few cycles I can even recall being more conservative than McCain were Buchanan, Keyes and Robertson. I would imagine that any RWers who don't see McCain as being Right enough would still vote for him in the general, despite his shameless pandering and Bush bootlicking over the past 6 years, even if he isn't a fundie True Believer (plus, his recent pandering to the Falwell crowd will undoubtedly help rehab his image w/that crowd).

You're right about Edwards "seeming" young, although he's, what, 53-54? Yeah, his Kennedy-esque youth and charm would certainly draw votes (and probably turn others off), but I would hope his intelligence and ideas would make a greater difference than appearance. And of course, First Lady Elizabeth would be a tremendous asset. Personally, I could support him... particularly since there probably won't be another Dem candidate whose positions are any less centrist than Edwards'. Too bad we'll never see a President Sanders, IMO.

5. The only way the Press would report McCain's contradiction

would be if he switched parties. They only report Dem contradictions. If it's an R contradiction, then that person is being "statesman-like" according to the press.

Heaven forbid Tweety ever having to say anything bad about his main squeeze.
