12. I'm sure you have heard it. Here is a video of John Fogerty performing it.
Edited on Thu Nov-23-06 03:01 PM by Minnesota_Lib
He wrote and first recorded it when he was with Creedence Clearwater Revival way back in the day.

You have to sit through an ad first but it is worth it. Enjoy.

15. Written specifically about David Eisenhower
Edited on Thu Nov-23-06 03:23 PM by IanDB1
Even though the right-wingers have started trying to claim it's about Al Gore:

From Snopes.com

<snip>

As it turns out, "Fortunate Son" was indeed inspired by the descendant of a prominent political figure, and since John Fogerty has named him while discussing the song's origins, we don't have to speculate about his identity: He is David Eisenhower, the grandson of former U.S. president Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the son-in-law of former U.S. president Richard Nixon (through his marriage to Nixon's daughter, Julie).

One of Fogerty's explanations of how he came to write "Fortunate Son" is quoted in Hank Bordowitz's unofficial history of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bad Moon Rising:

It's a confrontation between me and Richard Nixon ... The haves, the people who have it all. Not a positive image of the people who live up the hill, with their big cars. People I don't respect. During the Vietnam War, these were the people who didn't have to go to war. I was thinking about David Eisenhower, the grandson of Dwight, who married Julie Nixon. I always confused her with Tricia . I guess it's easy to pick on somebody named Tricia. It sounds so silver spoon.

Anyway, I was showing the band the song. I didn't have much. I knew the chord changes and could feel the energy. I had a title, "Fortunate Son," but no song. Yet I was showing the band the structure, my normal gig as the musical director of the band.

So, I went into the bedroom, sat on the edge of my bed with a yellow legal tablet and my felt-tipped pen. Out came the song. "It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate son." I was screaming inside, very intense, but not saying a word. Out it came, onto three sheets of legal paper.

It took about twenty minutes. It was like vrooom — it just came right out.

I played that song at an antiwar protest. As I was walking in the hallway after our set, someone came up to me and told me what an awesome version we had played. I remember telling them, "Richard Nixon is a great inspiration."

Nixon was always saying 'peace with honor' and 'my country, love it or leave it,' but we knew better 'cause the guy was obviously evil.

3. Here are the lyrics:
Fortunate Son

Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
Ooh, theyre red, white and blue.
And when the band plays hail to the chief,
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, lord,

It aint me, it aint me, I aint no senators son, son.
It aint me, it aint me; I aint no fortunate one, no,

Yeah!
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, dont they help themselves, oh.
But when the taxman comes to the door,
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes,

It aint me, it aint me, I aint no millionaires son, no.
It aint me, it aint me; I aint no fortunate one, no.

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war, lord,
And when you ask them, how much should we give?
Ooh, they only answer more! more! more! yoh,

It aint me, it aint me, I aint no military son, son.
It aint me, it aint me; I aint no fortunate one, one.

It aint me, it aint me, I aint no fortunate one, no no no,
It aint me, it aint me, I aint no fortunate son, no no no,

8. I missed that part
The TV was on, but I was in the next room cooking. I saw and heard just enough of the halftime show to be amused at the choice of songs. :-)

I also heard them mention Fogarty will be doing another halftime show at one of the other NFL games later today, but didn't catch which one. He'll probably do the same song. Ha!

17. Some people still think Springstein's "Born in The USA" is patriotic
Then again, they also thought about making "Born to Run" the official state song of New Jersey.

People really need to re-learn the fine art of actually listening to music.

By the way... they used the song "Dancing with Myself" in Pixar's g-rated movie "Flushed Away," and The CBS Morning Show used the song "Turning Japanese" in a piece about Japan-- even though both songs are about masturbation.

Did you guys catch that? I like the song, but thought that the context was demeaning considering the "theme" of the pregame is a salute to veterans and serving members of the armed forces. That song has a meaning them and now. And with the purposeful ending over and over. What a jerk!

16. IDOT FREEPERS! It is NOT an anti-war song!
It is about honoring the veterans and supporting the troops by shaming those who shirk their responsibilities behind a facade of false-patriotism while protected by wealth and privilege.

Freepers are fucking idiots.

25. Speaking of The Ballad of the Green Beret
the other week I heard it play on the syndicated oldies station in my city, but unbelievably later they played Universal Soldier sung by Donovan. It was written by Buffy Sainte-Marie and here are the lyrics:

He's five feet two and he's six feet four
He fights with missiles and with spears
He's all of 31 and he's only 17
He's been a soldier for a thousand years

He's a Catholic, a Hindu, an atheist, a Jain,
a Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew
and he knows he shouldn't kill
and he knows he always will
kill you for me my friend and me for you

And he's fighting for Canada,
he's fighting for France,
he's fighting for the USA,
and he's fighting for the Russians
and he's fighting for Japan,
and he thinks we'll put an end to war this way

And he's fighting for Democracy
and fighting for the Reds
He says it's for the peace of all
He's the one who must decide
who's to live and who's to die
and he never sees the writing on the walls

But without him how would Hitler have
condemned him at Dachau
Without him Caesar would have stood alone
He's the one who gives his body
as a weapon to a war
and without him all this killing can't go on

He's the universal soldier and he
really is to blame
His orders come from far away no more
They come from him, and you, and me
and brothers can't you see
this is not the way we put an end to war.

When I was in junior high school we had an assembly featuring Sgt. Barry Sadler who sang the Ballad of the Green Beret. I got to ask him a question and I asked why he wanted to be a Green Beret? He said he didn't--he was drafted.

26. Barry Sadler's Ballad of the Green Beret was different.
Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say
The brave men of the Green Beret

Silver wings upon his chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret

==============

I'm writing this from memory and right now that's all I can recall. When my father was in Vietnam, I memorized it and sang it constantly. Extremely popular song at the time.

During the 80's sold arms to the Guatemalan army. Loved the people but then realized all that money in fist was stained with their blood.

38. Thanks for the link.
Universal Soldier presents the whole picture of what the soldier is responsible for. Yes, the soldier not only gives us freedom of speech, religion, press, etc., but that same soldier also enables much of the evil and suppression done by governments in this world now and in the past.

This is protest, America! In many ways, this is the music version of Stephen Colbert's dinner speech at the White House. Don't let this fall on deaf ears. Hear what he's saying by singing this. Our voice is being heard.

Kudos to Fogerty. This is protestsexy.

42. Fogerty Tried To Explain It Several Years Ago
First...damn right, it's an anti-war song, and one of the finest.

He said that there was no one specific, but that he wrote this song while he was sitting in the National Guard after trying to avoid being drafted. Some of it was guilt as he was able to stay stateside, while others who weren't as fortunate were being shipped off to the meat-grinder. He wrote it more as a combination of his own frustrations of being drafted and seeing others who were being sent off from the places he was serving.

It's great to see John performing and sounding as good and strong as ever...for years he refused to play his Creedence stuff. I enjoyed the half time show more than the game.

Cheers to John Fogerty...he wrote an amazing amount of material in a short period of time.
