McCain Flip-Flops, Supports Immediate Reversal of Roe v. Wade
McCain Flip-Flops, Supports Immediate Reversal of Roe v. Wade

In 1999, the “moderate” version of John McCain said that overturning Roe v. Wade would be dangerous for women and he would not support it, even in “the long term.” Here’s McCain in the San Francisco Chronicle:

I’d love to see a point where it is irrelevant, and could be repealed because abortion is no longer necessary. But certainly in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade, which would then force X number of women in America to undergo illegal and dangerous operations.

This morning on ABC, McCain — now aggressively courting the likes of Jerry Falwell — expressed his unequivocal support for overturning Roe v. Wade.

1. What a craven whore. The commercials write themselves, though!
What is he thinking? He's not gonna win. He's too old, he has a terrible temper, his wife has had a stroke and isn't up to speed, that rattling sound we hear is skeletons in his closet, and he has a cancer that tends to recur.

Fuhgeddaboutit, Johnny...the best you'll do is SECDEF...and that's if no one else qualified wants the job.

And when he doesn't win..he can explain to the voters in Arizona why he flip flpped on RoevsWade. And maybe someone will come along like a Tester or a Webb in AZ and oust his "cravenwhore" ass.

5. The "integrity" and "straight talk" arguments are what would have won him
independent and even some Democratic support. Six months of "flip flop" and "both sides of a big mouth" ads, showing how he's been pandering to the frothing right will whittle away at his crossover appeal, and reduce the threat of him.

Just because the same mainstream press that helped lie us into Iraq, calls him a "maverick" at every opportunity doesn't make it so.

Just because the man paints "straight talk express" on the side of his bus, doesn't make it so...

9. I gave money to McCain
when he was running in the primaries against GWB. Knowing how the Rove machine got Bush into power in Texas, as Governor, I felt compelled to help anyone who would run against Dubya. McCain's courtship with the religious zealots disgusts me. To think that I once respected him enough to contribute to his campaign is unbelievable.

He will never be President because he's been spending the last few years gathering unacceptable baggage. All the Dems have to do is to run that sweaty photo of McCain hugging Bush.

take every opportunity to point out his many flip-flops and will make sure the famous picture of him hugging the chimp and the one of the two of them sharing birthday cake while people were drowning in New Ortleans are widely seen. The Dems have plenty of ammunition to use against McCain. They just need to be smart about it and not let the media get away with portraying him too positively.

The reason we won this last election was because of the young people and the women vote, at least that is what the demographic breakdown looks like

I hope they realize that IT IS THEIR BODIES

As far as other issues, he is a hawk on the war in Iraq, and now thanks to rangel, it will probably play right into his hands

BUT for most DEMOCRATS, DO NOT BACK DOWN ON THE ISSUES, whether they be a woman's right to choose, or the Iraq war, you do, and you deserve to lose in 2008

40. That was unforgiveable for a veteran
and you're absolutely correct. He knew, as did Tony Snow - with his puffed up false outrage, what Kerry was stumblingly trying to say. McCain sunk to the depths along with his Bush team handlers on that one. He could have shown some class.
The mask is off. We're seeing the true ugly McCain underneath.
(Also, his cringing kowtowing to the the same people who ran that nasty campaign against him when he opposed Dubya for the nomination back in '2000 makes me doubt his fortitude. He doesn't have to hate or publicly denounce them (although it would be understandable if he did). But he doesn't have to hire that same team for his campaign, either. He knows they're despicable. And now they're his guys. Or, rather, he's their guy. What a sellout. He was a courageous officer during the war. He must have left his soul back in Vietnam.

48. They didn't learn their lesson from South Dakota?
The PEOPLE voted NO to banning just about all abortions. What don't they understand about this? Bush and his religious right cronies may be pushing hard to overturn Roe, but when it comes right down to a vote by the people they say NO. South Dakota is hardly a blue, liberal state. If it comes right down to it, how many states would outright ban abortions across the board if Roe was overturned? Very, very few, if ANY.

As much as I detest Guiliani, he has not backed down on this for political gains. I will give him credit for that.

This is a LOSING BATTLE among the general public, and it is about time these politicians pandering to a SMALL MINORITY acknowledged it.

50. IF roe was overturned...which is unlikely unless the GOP totally sweeps next election...
...especially since they hit their high-water mark (it took about 30 years, but here it is)

But if ROE was overturned...

Im guessing that abortion would be at least as legal as it is now in New England, the Mid Atlantic and the Pacific coast. The northern Midwest and Southwest would have substantial restrictions on abortion, but would allow anyone who needed one to get one. In places like Florida, Virginia, Ohio, Montana, Pennsylvania and Wyoming (States that are bellwhethers on abortion) they would basicaly have a medical panel system where abortion's legality would be decided on a case-by-case basis. In the Upper South and Great Plains, abortion would probably be illegal with some exceptions. (if the woman is not legally responsible for the pregnancy or for her immediate self-defense). Then Utah,Tennessee,Georgia,Alabama,Georgia,Mississippi,Lousianna and Arkansas would basically have a total ban on all abortions (immediate self-defense of mother doesn't count and some of these states might go further than that).

to be able to run the 'necessary' ads when the time comes. The stakes are so enormous that all of us here at DU have to work on increasing our numbers to at least 150k by January 2008 so we can effectively mount email and phone campaigns.

I disagree a bit. I think he tries to lean whichever way the wind blows, but misreads it every time.

This is the guy who started sucking up to Bush pretty much right when he was entering a death-spiral. Now, when the vast majority of Americans believe (rightly so) that the republican party has moved too far to the right, what does he do? Moves farther to the right.

Mr. McCain: you, sir, are an idiot.

94. Spot on, my friend. His career as my Senator is testament to that.
He's no maverick; he really hasn't got any personal platform.

He's pandering to the RRR now to build up cash--but he'll stab them in the back just as surely as he has us Arizonans for 19 years. I'd personally love to see him run for '08 so that he can be defeated and we can get nearly anybody else in that seat.

I'd prefer a Goldwater type conservative over a flip-flopper with bad timing any day.

A couple of neocons I know started that same song and dance and finally shut up when they were told that there were more Federalist Papers than #12. How that wubfambitz can look at himself in the mirror is beyond me. For that matter, he has unmitigated gall to even look at any of our people in the service.

as he was one of those who voted for the insane Robert Bork back in 1987, see link below...

Make no mistake, John McCain might not be as vocal & outspoken as a Rick Santorum, etc. but McCain is definitely a far-right crackpot...

It will be intersting to see whether it's McCain or Rudy Guilani, I doubt the other Republican candiates stand a chance...

109. not a moderate, not a good public speaker either
This makes me sick. For the longest time the media has portrayed this guy as a moderate because he stood up to the President on a few issues, and now he has to appeal to his "base". Why not grow a backbone and stick to what you believe in. Personally I believe in abortion and it should be "safe, legal, and rare". I haven't changed a bit on that one.

If I were the GOP I wouldn't put this guy out there in 2008 as a candidate. He is not that good of a public speaker. The president should be able to carry himself or herself with class, and be able to speak with elequence. But, it's not up to me and their mistake could be an advantage for us.

I respect what McCain did in Vietnam, but this is just plain wrong.
