Who scares you more as a Presidential candidate, Rudy or McCain?

I would say Rudy. He's a younger, funnier, more energetic speaker that would appeal to many independant voters; and possibly some Democratic ones.

Rudy does have some issues; mainly marriage problems, being pro-choice, and being pro gay rights.

McCain, on MTP, was boring, looked old, and waffled when he spoke on just about every position. Clark, Obama, or Gore would have no problem making him look even worse when they're put side to side.

Now that George Allen is out of the picture, is there another Republican candidate that might step up and knock these two out?

Both - because they both have gotten a free ride with the media and only the genial side of their personalities is usually shown. Both also have an iconic image of a hero - where there were genuine positives though neither was as good as they were portrayed. McCain was a pretty mediocre officer until he was captured, but he showed character when he refused to do what he would have had to Guiliani ignored calls to get the police and Fire departments on compatible communications for years and this did likley cause some unneccesary lifes. He was a control freak which fit perfectly in the aftermath though.

Neither - Both have very negative personal lives that will be used in th eprimaries. Also, it was clear that McCain has been bullied by Bush for 6 years. Rudy connections to Kerick and others will be used in the primaries. The GOP may turn there nastiness on each other, leading to a weaker candidate. MSNBC has been referring to Romney as a "popular MA governor", even though it's pretty clear he would have lost re-election. Or maybe they will run Huckabee.

Rudy can't make it past the Southern primaries, especially if one of his opponents has Rove or a protege of his on staff.

McCain has stretched himself so thin by trying to be everything to everyone that he couldn't handle a long campaign either, not to mention I'm sure it'll be actively discouraged for sitting Repuke Senators to run, because they'd miss votes and give us a de facto Joementum-proof majority.

However, if someone comes out of nowhere with really strong fundie cred, a clean personal life, and the willingness to be a little progressive on labor to steal some Democratic thunder, but not enough to really antagonize the big corporate money he'll start taking in once he wins the nomination, that is someone to fear. I think that's the only sort of candidate they can put up who wouldn't get crushed as bad as Dole did in '96, much less stand a chance of winning.

The tagline occurred to me a few months ago - but someone beat me to posting it here.

I'd love to work for the dems - but I can't use phrases like "the fucking idiots in office." Or "Jesus-loving torturemongers."

For McaCain who knows, maybe after 5 years in a Vietnamese rathole he decided he liked the torture. Maybe that's why stuck around. If it was good for him (he's reaped the bennies of being a senator for quite a while), the brownskins will love it.

I'm more worried about jackasses like Sam Brownback or, God forbid, Rick Santorum. Independents like both Rudy and McCain, but Rudy is an adulterer and he's pro-choice, which won't go over really well with the conservatives in the GOP. He would need a big moderate turnout in the primaries to win.

McCain is conservative-the freepers and others claim he isn't, but he is against abortion and is a Reagan republican. If he could convince enough of the base to vote for him, he will beat Rudy in the primaries.

I think Hillary could beat Rudy, and I'm not sure she could beat McCain. An Edwards/Obama ticket could run a good race against McCain.

Kerry needs to STFU and be happy in the Senate. Same with Biden. Gore, Edwards, Hillary and Obama are our best potential candidates, and we would have a good, competitive primary race between them.
