Webb is at a press conf. saying he is for SOCIAL JUSTICE and against
corporate welfare, etc.

Does that sound like a "conservative" Democrat to you?

13. Courage is what we need!
The rightwingers, at least the ultra-conservative ones, have been throw on the trash-heap of history.

7. He got sick of the corruption in the Reagan admin. Glad he's
now a Dem. He seems like a great guy.

10. Well, I think people refer to his views on culture issues....
And he's not really a dove a military matters. I think you're using the wrong word, he's moderate, not conservative.

11. All day long on CNN and MSNBC Webb was referred to as a
'conservative' Democrat.

I think that's exactly why he said what he said in his speech.

16. Good. We need more and more "conservative" Democrats
Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 12:35 AM by Leopolds Ghost
Who ran on a vehement anti-Iraq war platform and are to the left on bread-and-butter issues.

18. True, but he's smart enough to spot a military quagmire
Read his article "Do we really want to occupy Iraq for the next 30 years?". He was predicting the insurgency while Shrub was saying "They will greet us as liberators."

12. He describes himself as
A conservative on defense, a moderate on social issues, and an economic populist.

14. There are worse combinations...
especially when it comes to getting elected -- he's got a good recipe there, although I personally wouldn't mind a little more moderation on defense.

17. Traditionally, "conservative on defense" involved a LOT of moderation.
Like NOT defining it as "OFFENSE", for starters.
NOT invading nations that are no threat to us.

Of course, time will tell what Webb means when he uses the phrase....

22. Well, he and other military leaders are to the "left" of Clinton on Iraq, I guess.
"Post 9/11" New York area Dems seem to be taking a DLC stance on Iran/Iraq.

23. To be precise, Webb ran some of the hardest hitting Iraq ads
Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 12:07 PM by Leopolds Ghost
this side of moveon.org. "Staying the course is not a strategy for a failed occupation... we need to end the war in Iraq and find a diplomatic solution to peace in the Middle East"

And he's more of an economic/cultural populist than moveon.org so that's a plus in my book.

Lest Freepers seize on this, I'll point out that Lugar (R-IN) and Sen. Warner (R-VA) have similar "conservative" attitudes to the war right now.

15. he is one that interests me the most so far
in terms of what and how he will do in the Senate.

i already know i Love Bernie Sanders, Sherrod Brown and others.

so far Webb looks like he will do well. i liked his speaking out against Karl Rove type tactics on Larry King.

19. I know this way far out there
since he was just elected and all, but I go to a music board that has alot of conservatives and some are actually saying they can see him running for Prez. It got me thinking, all these new faces. He's not the only Democrat they're coming out of the closet for, it's very weird!

21. I've been saying this ever since I looked him up at ontheissues.org
Webb is not a Conservative even if he calls himself one to get elected. I'd say that he'll be right about in the middle of the caucus.
