YES!-Just got off a conference call with Kennedy and others (Firedoglake)

And Away We Go....

Just got off a conference call with Ted Kennedy and others, and we got a better idea where the Dems are on all of this.

Some notes:

Maria Cantwell is reportedly quite wobbly, and might be succeptible to pressure. If Cantwell falls, Murray will potentially fall too.

Levin, Harkin, Bayh, Lautenberg, Lincoln, Pryor and Lieberman (who has not in fact committed) all need pressure.

Kennedy says the press have been able to convince people that the Dems they are obstructionist; they have been successful in spreading the perception that Daschle was an obstructionist, and look what happened to him. They believe that voting their consience on this matter is "obstructionist," and they think they will pay a fiersome price back home if they are perceived thusly, so PLEASE let them know that just the opposite is true.

1. Tell Kennedy that wealthy Dems need to buy KnightRidder news organization
or that will be the END of ANY objective press.

10. Yes! Thank you!
And where's Soros when you need him? And what happened to Larry Flynt, who was remarkable about pushing certain democratic issues? Did the GOP get to them too?

"obstructionist" claims, that Frist himself and other Republicans too, filibustered when it was convenient to them:

Here is some info of interest from PFAW's page on the nuclear option:

...staunch nuclear option proponents like Senators Hatch and Frist have their own histories to explain.

In 1994, when some Republicans were opposing a cloture vote on a judicial nomination, Hatch defended the minority’s right to filibuster, declaring that the filibuster is “one of the few tools the minority has to protect itself and those the minority represents.”

More recently Senator Frist voted to support a Republican filibuster of a Clinton appellate nominee, Richard Paez, and even voted for a motion to postpone consideration of the nomination after cloture had been invoked – an exceedingly rare tactic used to avoid a final vote.

Senator Howard Baker Jr. (R-TN), stated during the successful filibuster waged against Abe Fortas (which he supported): "On any issue the majority at any given moment is not always right."

I don't get why they're cracking under media pressure. Haven't they figured out yet that the media is not the Democrats' friend, ever? After eight years and counting, of the media favoring the repugs, you'd think the Dems would ignore their crap.

19. Local Offices!! CALL and FAX
I apologize for the length of this, but this is an emergency!

Friends and Activists,

I know you are probably overwhelmed, as I am, with what is happening, but one
more time, PLEASE call the Democratic senators Monday toll-free at
1-877-851-6437. Tell them you SUPPORT the filibuster!! Word has it that due to
overwhelming response to the Alito situation, many Senators have full voicemails
or have turned them off due to all the calls!!! So below, I have listed
alternate local offices for the Senators we need to focus on this WEEKEND!!
Remember, a lot of people's cell phones have free weekends and most have free
long distance, so this weekend would be a great time to call and leave a
message, but still call on MONDAY, too!!! Kerry is leading the filibuster, but
there are several DEMS who need a kick in the hiney to SUPPORT THE FILIBUSTER!!
We need to call them, especially--They are:

28. Their bubbles haven't been pierced yet. Gore, Kerry, Dean, Kennedy, Murtha
learned the hard way what the media has been up to all these years.

Many Dems haven't stuck their necks out so far that their heads get kicked in on a regular basis.

27. I a Senator believes that voting their conscience on this issue will cost
them their seat, and the don't vote their conscience, then the don't belong there anyway.

30. What makes the dems think that being
called an obstructionist is a bad thing? Why do they walk away from it with their tails between their legs and heads lowered? They could just say 'Thank You'. You bet I'm an obstructionist and damned proud of it. You want to know what we obstructed? We obstructed the GOP from shredding the constitution, we obstructed them from taking your pensions. etc, etc. Throw it back at them, they just have to show that they need obstructing. Every dems needs to say it and say it everywhere. That's the problem they each run their own little campaigns and don't see the big picture.

33. I know, I am surprised to see Levin on the undecided list
most of the time he does the right thing. I called his office Friday, the staffer was really nice and it sounded like they were getting lots of calls - he knew exactly what I was talking about, and he didn't take my info down like they normally do in his office (they usuaslly take my name/address and I get a letter a few weeks later).

I really hope he comes out for the filibuster.

34. I'm thinking of picketing his Lansing office.
I've been calling them every day for over a week on this, and I'm thinking of telling them that I'm coming up from Battle Creek to picket if I have to--with my son and a sign for him, too. I can't understand Levin's take, I guess.
