Kerry calling for a filibuster from Switzerland isn't helping - IT HURTS.
Perception is reality in many things. And by him staying in Switzerland while calling for a filibuster here has the appearance that he isn't that interested in it. Sorry, but that is the image that it reflects, and in politics image counts for a lot.

Yes, I know he can send faxes, make calls, send emails, and all of that. But none of that takes the place of face to face talks. And it it just too damn last minute.

LBJ was ultra effective in the senate, as measured by getting things done. He began working senators, twisting arms, cajoling, weeks in advance of a vote. And he did it in person, because that had a more lasting effect.

Kerry tries to do it at the last couple of day, between ski runs in Switzerland?

If this is the way some of our leaders try to run their side of the senate nowadays, then no wonder we are so ineffective.

I bet Alito has already had a tailor make his robes.

OK, Flame away. Asbestos long-johns are on, trap door is closed.

BUT, this is going to hurt us in 06. Write it down. Rove is having a extra dry martini tonight, as much as it pains me to admit it. Hope you won't hate me for saying so. ;)

38. This is from the Hotline blog and they usually love to slam Dems
"Sen. Sessions, McCain Is Leading The Delegation

Yes, yes, Kerry was at Davos. Effete, snow-skiing filibustering liberal. Ha Ha. Funny. Original, too!

Well -- so were Sens. Sununu and Chambliss and at least a half dozen Bush administration officials, along with delegation leader Sen. John McCain.

Take it away, Jeff Sessions, who said on the floor of the Senate today that folks attending Davos "ought to spend more time trying to get the oil prices and gasoline prices down."

Maybe..."

4. He was on the Senate floor this afternoon
Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 09:41 PM by rox63
Yesterday he was attending an economic forum in Switzerland with a bunch of other Senators, Congressmen and govt officials. He came home early to work on the filibuster, after it became obvious the Dem leadership wasn't going to do anything.

23. To me this is beyond bizzare
The President's press sectretary makes an obnoxious comment that Kerry was calling for a filibuster from Dovos. The fact that Kerry this afternoon made a fiery speech on the Senate floor and is photographed at another time today speaking to reporters with th ecapital in the background is not even being considered. Every show is repeating Scotty's nonsense. Even people here - who could see several threads about a Senate speech by Kerry - are repeating the nonsense.

Kerry had a long standing commitmant to go to Davos - Kerry obviously cared about both because he spoke in the Senate against ALito on Wed and went to the Dem caucus, flew tp Davos for the Thursday session, flew back to give a fiery speech on the Senate floor. (He cancelled a speech in Ireland on Sunday)

What is amazing is that the media is spreading this obvious lie.

29. The 'media' is not 'liberal' or 'conservative'...
It is bought and paid for... That is why I NEVER watch any station, any news station.

Anything and everything coming over the tv or radio waves is expertly crafted and paid for by these evil bastards in office that have/trying to steal our country.

Why do we allow this? How do we stop them? Please somebody tell me...

As were leaders from around the world.

they were going to slam him and slam him hard just as they would slam anyone who got in their way.

They are outraged and they will do what they can to divide and demoralize the Democrats. Unfortunately many will, after all this time and all these slanders, still fall for it.

My husband saw this great t-shir. Bush fools America once--Shame on bush. Bush fools America twice--Shame on America.

17. That was Yesterday. Today he was on the Senate Floor in Washington DC
Staking out his position on the Senate Floor in Washngton DC.

On a factual correction: Kerry wasn't skiing this time, he was attending the World Economic Forum, which is important but, not as important as this matter.

So I can't say that I disagree with your concerns. Indeed, I had the similar reaction yesterday until the fucking fascists media ran with the yodeling from the slopes meme which was then repeated from Snotty at today's press corp. It's a classic KKKROVE talking points meme.

On the other hand, it was also a classic Kerry mis-step. His timing always seems to be off in key political junctures, but I'm ready to forgive him and over look it, because he swiftly returned and appeared on the Senate floor this morning.

He's talking the talk. Now we need him to walk the walk and not be overly concerned with the corporate fascists msm, because it's not the first time they've turned a nothing matter into a rediculous joke, and it's not going to be the last time. They are viscious fascists, murderous neo nazi bastards. So we will expect much worse to come.

18. Propaganda
You've been fooled. Don't feel bad-when I first heard it- I thought the same thing-"why the hell isn't he here NOW we need him NOW-whatever he's doing there isn't as important as America!" Then you see he's here-today on the senate floor. You bought the propaganda. That you would buy the "sking" crap shows you may hate Kerry anyway. Many do, if you believe the worst of someone when it's from their enemy and don't give them a hint of benefit of a doubt that would tell me you don't like him to begin with. That's how propaganda works-a little truth- a little doubt-omission of most relevant facts-and repeat over and over and over.

19. This Is Another Republican Talking Point Coming To Life On DU
A favorite trick of republicans is to ridicule democrats...all day, every day...

They trivialized the tremendous damage to our nation that Alito will do by laughing at those who stand up to his disasterous appointment...

I salute those who stand up...including John Kerry...and this is no laughing matter...The smirking chimp may be laughing, but he laughs easily and cruely at the misfortunes and defeats of the little people while he is so cowardly as to fear the questions of an 81 year old woman...What a yellow steak he has down his weak little spine...

I haven't seen any news all day. I thought he was still there. That it may have been for an economic summit doesn't mean much to me, as many congress-critters find reasons to go to nice places.

He was still in Switzerland when he should have been here pressing the flesh if he wanted to take a lead in this.

30. He didn't WANT to, he had duties out of the country - he HAD to because
no one else was stepping up to join Kennedy in the battle, and Kennedy had just taken two weeks of incoming during and after the hearings.

Kerry was scheduled at an economic meeting as a Senate leader on the Finance Committee. RW media machine spun his business there into a ski trip.

Kerry was then scheduled to be in Ireland for a huge speech, but cancelled it to get on the Senate floor today and press for the filibuster. ALL within 20 hours.

Because NO ONE ELSE WAS STEPPING UP TO HELP KENNEDY.

25. Too bad you're allowing their perception to become your reality.
I've seen people accused of swallowing the Right's talking points on DU, but I've never done it myself. Done the accusing, I mean. Well, let this be a first. Your assessment on this sounds just like the picayune objections the Right always manages to make every story about. The most notorious example being how they managed to make Kerry's service in Vietnam worse-sounding than Bush's non-service. Kerry didn't do it right; he didn't get medals for the right injuries; therefore they could discount his service on an actual war front.

I think you should be less worried about the image of things and be more concerned with substance. Leave image-mongering to hollow craven Republicans.

39. You Preach About Perception Yet Fell Prey To It.
Kerry was there legitimately for an economic conference. Is he supposed to STOP being a Senator while he's there?

Furthermore, He still lobbied support while there, and returned today to rev things up even more. OUR perception is that he did an AMAZING thing that we are proud of and support him with. THEIR perception is to convince the sheeple that he was a skiing elitist that doesn't care and just asked for a filibuster while waiting for a ski lift, with no intent to follow up.

I fear, friend, that you fell prey to THEIR perception, not ours. Though I don't mean this harshly, I think it is you that needs to be preached to about perception.
