12. It did *already* do good - If you feel really good, it did good!
Remember to keep "process" in mind as well as "product" -- each time we take action as a community and wake up more and more citizens that *is* the important result, as much or more than actually getting the eventual result we want.

Analogy: If you judge a sports team only in terms of wins, you will miss out on seeing each of the team members improving and seeing how the team is working together better and better as they work and work and work themselves into position of strength and skill from which they cannot lose.

29. It's about open government, not partisan politics
Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 09:53 AM by Democracy deth watch
Only the Senate has the power to ask questions of a court nominee. As a result, senators are surrogate journalists, collecting information for the public. That process may be incomplete with regard to Judge Alito.

30. Interesting perspective.
Makes you wonder how many of them are "bought and paid for" journalists, such as Matthews, Couric, et cetera.

You have a depressing but great DU membership name. Welcome to DU. :hi:

31. Even though not US Citizens
Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 05:29 PM by jmatthan
and we do not live in the US, we have also acted on your behalf. The text of our fax was:

Samuel Alito’s record is clear to all of us around the world.

So is the threat posed by his nomination:

1. Presidential power unchecked by judicial oversight;
2. Congress stripped of much of its ability to protect the environment;
3. Americans stripped of their right to privacy and subject to abuses of corporate and government power.

America is closer to fascism than appears to you in the thick of it.

Can you see the trees for the forest?

Filibuster is not a tool to be used trivially.

Alito is not a trivial threat. The Senate hearings, which we watched thanks to CSpan, revealed the man who is hiding behind a mask. It was truly frightening.

As a Senator who is supposed to represent the people who elected you, please stand up for your Senate seat, stand up for the Constitution, and stand up for your electorate.

In the name of all people of the world who love democracy, not just the US, please filibuster Samuel Alito’s nomination to the United States Supreme Court.
