9. Another question for Allen:
Why did you spraypaint racist graffiti on the walls of your high school back when you were a teenager, and then lie about it in an interview earlier this year?

Allen's attacks on Webb's books are backfiring here in Virginia for the same reason that Kilgore's attacks on Tim Kaine backfired and for the same reason that the macaca incident undermined Allen's campaign severely. Virginia voters have demonstrated that they are sick of over the top negative campaigning. One of Webb's smartest moves, and one which he pointed out during the GOTV vote rally last weekend where he responded to the attacks on his books, was that when he was asked about the macaca incident, the Jewish heritage incident, or any of the other questions that have been raised about Allen's character, he chose not to comment.

The risk is that this late in the campaign, there could be a backlash against Webb if his supporters (not him) are perceived to be engaging in the kinds of attacks that have turned off voters when used by ALlen against Webb.

The issue will get whatever play it gets from the incident today. Pushing it further is not smart politics.
