A man's most potent weapon in controlling women: scissors
Genital Cutting on Trial in Georgia Case
By DOUG GROSS

Associated Press Writer

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. The trial of an Atlanta-area father accused of circumcising his 2-year-old daughter with scissors is focusing attention on an ancient African practice that experts say is slowly becoming more common in the U.S. as immigrant communities grow.

Khalid Adem, a 31-year-old immigrant from Ethiopia, is charged with aggravated battery and cruelty to children. Human rights observers said they believe this is the first criminal case in the U.S. involving the 5,000-year-old practice.

Prosecutors say Adem used scissors to remove his daughter's clitoris in their apartment in 2001. The child's mother said she did not discover it until more than a year later.

"He said he wanted to preserve her virginity," Fortunate Adem, the girl's mother, testified this week. "He said it was the will of God. I became angry in my mind. I thought he was crazy."

The girl, now 7, also testified, clutching a teddy bear and saying that Adem "cut me on my private part." Adem cried loudly as his daughter left the courtroom.

Female circumcision is common in Adem's homeland, and his lawyer, Mark Hill, acknowledged that Adem's daughter had been cut. But he said his client did not do it, and he implied that the family of Fortunate Adem, who immigrated from South Africa when she was 6, may have had the procedure done.

3. I don't have a baby girl, so I'm not sure - but would you
necessarily spread the vagina to notice it. It would be tiny at that age, wouldn't it?

Or maybe it wouldn't be something you would think to look for?

(Mother of a boy and another one, sex unknown at this point, on the way).

12. you don't have to spread vulva necessarily, here is physiology stuff
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clitoris
picture of adult, but still about the same for little kid. And it seems that a 2 yr old would experience some discomfort and blood on diaper/underwear.

13. You mean spread the labia ,majora???
The clitoris isn't in or near the vagina. Just clarifying in case some poor fellow who doesn't know where The Clitoris is is reading this. :)

Even on a baby girl it is still noticeable without much trouble.

10. Supposedly the father took time off work to care for the child

"Her dad is accused of mutilating her when she was two years old. Her mother says she didnt see any blood or notice anything right away because the father took time off from work at the time she thinks it happened, so he could change all the diapers and bathe her."

4. No - mutilation is quite a bit different than telling someone how
they have to dress.

Geesch. :eyes:

7. It's all part of the same animal.
The same exact sentiment underlies both mandating the veil and female circumcision - controlling female sexuality, or more directly - eliminating it.

8. The same mindset that presumes to have the right to tell a woman...
...what clothes she must wear, is the same mindset that thinks outrages such as this are just jim-dandy.

Geesch...post #4. That was fast.

9. I agree.
Of course, the same people who tell a woman what clothes she must wear are the same people who tell women what clothes they cannot wear...

6. This is sick and brutal.
FGM is a crime in the US (is it a felony?), and should be all over the world, no matter what "religion and culture" excuses can come up with.

Show me an athiest who invented brutal sugury on infant's genitals, female or male.

16. Power and using communism was their religion.
Even the Romans worshipped Jupiter, Apollo, etc. as well as their own hubric power. They invented crucifixion.

But the point is this, that FGM is butchery, and to hide behind some excuse of a "religious tenet" is nothing short of cowardly.

21. would you believe that this jerk caller on the local black radio
station tried to blame this practice on whites?

I can't remember his reasoning, but this practice in Africa dates much further than the slave trade.

Africans aren't the only ones practicing it either.

19. I hope he gets the harshest punishment allowed by law.
Not only has he ruined her chances of having a healthy sex life, but girls die during these mutilations. It's disgusting and it needs to be stopped worldwide.
