In which the Author narrates a weird idea association sequence he went through
Edited on Sat Oct-28-06 05:54 PM by Commie Pinko Dirtbag
OK, in the first place I post a thread, in the Lounge, about the white and black twin boys born in Britain recently. Lots of "awwww how cute" responses ensue. One of the posters declares her intention to "blow raspberries" on their tummies.

Ignorant of what blowing raspberries is, but already suspecting it from the context, I go search the term in Wikipedia. Bingo, it's, like I thought, doing the "PPHHHHHFT" thing with your mouth. Very familiar with the delicious resulting baby laughter, I am.

A notice on the Wikipedia page calls my attention. It says one of the most famous uses of such sound is in a short Donald Duck toon called "Der Fuehrer's Face."

I've heard of that before! But only in books. You scarcely ever see WW2 propaganda toons in the likes of Cartoon Network nowadays. But now - aha, now we have YouTube. I duly find and watch the toon. There's even a version with English subtitles, although they're barely necessary. I start going on the same theme and find a lovely Popeye toon called "Spinach for Britain," in which the Sailor Man beats down a sub manned by a pair of caricatural Sieg-Heiling fat Nazi officers. There's also a chilling toon by Disney called "Education for Death" about the indoctrination of a Hitler Youth. And a wonderfully silly Looney Tunes short called "The Ducktator." (no, it isn't Daffy, although he does make a cameo) I heartily recommend you search and watch those. Won't post links in order not to alert the, if you pardon me, Copyright Nazis.

In the meantime, the right vertical lists that come wit each video gave me some diverse but related material. One of them is a wonderful 1947 piece against bigotry called "Don't Be a Sucker." You can forgive some factual inaccuracies (like for example portraying the Nazis as Catholic haters, whereas Hitler himself was a Catholic) - perhaps some of those distortions were felt as needed to rally the population against the Nazis.

You'll also forgive the racial stereotyping of the Japanese. It was the more than 60 years ago, remember.

There's also some Nazi propaganda, even Nazi propaganda toons. very unsettling to watch but very instructive. Particularly enlightening is the way they pull bogus numbers out of their asses to "prove" the evilness of the Jews. Rings quite a few bells indeed.

But then I stumbled upon something that made my jaw drop: one of the links was to a Spanish WW2 video describing something called the Blue Division. Upon watching, I learn that Spanish soldiers did fight in WW2 after all. On Hitler's side. Which is not really surprising given who put Franco where he was, but sad to know nonetheless for a half-Spaniard lefty like me.

But no, that's not the scary thing. The scary thing is that the poster of the video, here in the year 2006, SINGS THE PRAISES of such troops. He's a Falangist -- Franco's party still exists in Spain as a political entity. There's also lots of other videos by the same guy demonizing Zapatero. This other one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnTF-lUNJWo ) is particularly enlightening. The pseudo-animation can be translated as such:

Zapatero-Moses: "Commandment XI: I bless the unnatural union of people of the same gender, which will be called 'marriage.'"
Jesus-y couple: "Hey, what about us?"
Zapatero-Moses: "YOU FUCK YOURSELVES!"
Tombstone: "Here lies Spain - 1492-2006 - Zapatero killed it - We allowed him"

Gee, I didn't know Spain's recent gay marriage law had nullified all straight marriages. Silly me. And it dissolved an entire country too! Wow! Did it dismember like the USSR? I didn't know that!

Ah, here's one of his videos praising Hitler's Spanish cannon fodder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuJ9gbXAoyg - his description translates as such:

"This is a little homage to the Blue Division from the National Alliance, dedicated to all of those immortal heroes who offered their lives for Europe's freedom."

You'll find a comment under those video which translates as:

"Fought for Europe's freedom by fighting alongside Hitler... that's 18,000 more soldiers he had to kill Americans and Brits in the west... suuuuuure, right...

Nazi."

I wonder who posted that one. ;)

The lesson, ladies and gentlemen, is that Francoists ARE Nazis, and don't let anybody convince you otherwise.

And it all began with a couple of cute babies.

1. Interesting post
I read about the Blue Division in a book on WWII military uniforms. However, I wouldn't call Francoists Nazis, though, just useful idiots for Nazism. They're definately fascists though.

2. That was a fun read
That sounds like most of my internet sessions, in which one shiny link leads to something else, which then gets me thinking about a third thing, and before you know it you've ended up somewhere completely unexpected, and learned something to boot.

In a not-really-related side note, Google's takeover of YouTube will kill it. It is inevitable. It is an under-appreciated resource, and I will miss it.

3. The Francoists are Nazis, and
a lot of anti-Nazi Germans went to Spain in the 30's to fight against Franco, as did a lot of Americas. The latter formed the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, which was an organization reviled by American officialdom as a Communist front group. When I was drafted and had to get some minimal security clearances for infantry training, they made me sign something swearing I had never been a membar of a whole bunch of left-wing groups. The Abraham Lincoln Brigade was stil on that list. This was 1967.

So you're not the only one for whom this stuff can set of a chain of associations.
