Spencer thinks it's okay to call Hillary 'ugly,' but not a 'lesbian'

October 24, 2006 -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's GOP challenger recently used the word "lesbian" while chatting about her, it was revealed yesterday.

Candidate John Spencer, who has gotten into hot water before with off-the-wall comments about his rival, made the crack while talking with a newspaper reporter over his preparations for two debates with Clinton.

"He was being facetious and said, 'As long as I don't call her a lesbian, I'm OK,' " Journal News columnist Phil Reisman told WCBS/Channel 2 yesterday, recalling the conversation he had with Spencer on Wednesday.

Over the years, Clinton's strongest detractors have called her a lesbian to smear her.

Spencer spokesman Rob Ryan didn't deny the exchange between Reisman and his boss took place, but added, "If he offended anyone, he apologizes for it."

A Clinton spokesman didn't respond to requests for comment.
