Are there any 'Second Life' users here at DU???
|
Edited on Mon Oct-23-06 06:32 PM by Rick Myers
I have a ton of questions, and I'd like to address them to folks that have used the Second Life Virtual world. I have alot of experience working with (failed) virtual worlds, going back to Virtus on 386s in 1993. But SL might be approaching the 'tipping point.' The Internets didn't succeed because a bunch of geeks were playing with HTML all day, it succeeded because it was USEFUL. With SL's micro-economy moving nearly 1/2 a million US bucks daily, is it a killer app?

I stumbled across it last week reading someone's blog. I'm a long way from computer literate, but it was intriguing and from what I read/saw -imho- looks to have a future in the e-conomy. Hope you get a discussion going here so I can listen in.

3. I haven't done too much with it

But I'm there wandering around. It takes a little time to learn about all the features.

4. Agreed the interface is a bit daunting...

I've had the chance to visit it using the eMagin 800 VR goggles, which allows headtracking and 3d audio support. Still not fully STEREO, but fairly cool. Worth $600, NO. But worth seeing (no pun intended).
I really would like to get a discussion going on about the state of 3D on the web and it's application in an environment like DU.

I do business in SL. It's not a killer app like email, but for those who enjoy role playing and virtual worlds, etc., it is. More real money is going to change hands there in the months ahead. Reuters now has a news bureau there, if that tells you anything.

and he's hooked. He may be able to discuss your questions. A SL DU meet up might be fun!

7. I think they need to redo their 3d engine

It's very clunky and dated. But the idea of a world built by the users is great. SL has potential, but I don't see Linden Labs working very hard on overhauling their outdated engine and interface. Someone else - some other company - will have to take it to the next level and show Linden what they could have done. For now, it's a moderately fun place to putter around, and little else.
