Back in 1937 the Evil Weed was associated in the mind of the public with jazz musicians and people who liked that kind of music, and you know about that type. It starts with listening to a record "just to see what it's like", then going to dances where they play it live, then to the hard-core stuff, like nightclubs that let in people from different backgrounds and even (gasp!) races). And We Can't Have That.

And of course, once it's illegal it has to stay that way, because to legalize it would be to admit that the government was wrong.

What's really bad about the anti-marijuana laws it that it leads people to think that if the government lied about one drug's effects, they'll lie about all of them. Unfortunately, there are some drugs that do have really bad side effects - "Speed Kills", as we used to say in the 70s.

Marijuana probably does have some harmful side effects if used excessively - the smoke can't be all that good for the lungs. And I once burned my fingers. On the whole, though, we're ignoring a potentially useful herb (and remember most medicines originally came from herbal sources) because we have to perpetuate a 70-year old fear.
