The White House yesterday released a photo of President Bush meeting with right-wing radio hosts.

The guests:

– Sean Hannity (”aking sure Nancy Pelosi doesn’t become the speaker” is “worth … dying for“)
– Neal Boortz (Islam is a “deadly virus“)
– Laura Ingraham (Sens. Biden and Boxer are “on the side of” Kim Jong-Il)
– Mike Gallagher (Gore and Hitler “brilliantly put together side by side” in campaign video)
– Michael Medved (”he subject of my conversation with the president of the United States” was that Islam has “a special violence problem.”)

4. My take in a LTTE

As critical as the coming election is, I never imagined it would be a referendum on our constitution. By signing the Military Commissions Act into law Bush has challenged patriotic Americans to stand up for rights they always believed were inviolate. The President and his equally incompetent Secretary of Defense now have the power to name any of us “unlawful enemy combatants” and dispense with the rights that are fundamental to our democracy. A government that has inspired nothing but contempt has now shown us that it must also be feared.

Dick Cheney had something approaching a grin as he looked on. On the same day Bush met privately with a select group of radical right wing talk show hosts. Is it paranoid to think that we are about to see a campaign against dissent that will certify Bush’s absolute power and chill any opposition to his seizing even more power?

We have one chance to stop this madness. No matter how the Republicans try to spin it, this election is not local. In every state we will be choosing a congress that may have as awesome a responsibility as the framers of our constitution had when our nation was born. All others issue vanish when the basis of our very freedom is at stake. Do not send anyone to Congress who has aided and abetted this criminal usurpation of our rights.

(which I force myself to, on occasion, because we need to know)

I am reminded that the Rwandan genocide was incited by radio. And sometimes I also think about the Milgram experiment.

And then I start intensely hoping that I just have an overactive imagination.
