I just got a letter from the IRS, what do you guys think of this?
Edited on Tue Oct-17-06 02:42 PM by KyndCulture
Asking me to update my address information with them (since I moved since the last time I filed) and I just renewed my voter ID about 4 weeks ago.

Anybody ever get one of these letters?

I'm prone to freak outs but it looks like they just grabbed my voter ID info (with the same spelling mistake of my street) and are just wanting me to update.

I'm currently extremely unemployed so I don't think I owe them anything but...

What do you guys think? harmless or nefarious?

16. You might also want to contact your Supervisor of Elections to make
sure they correct the spelling error on their records too.

20. Yeah they did that already.
I told them not to waste a new card, just update the rolls.

They said no biggie.

and send it back in the postage paid envelope.

Didn't sound like an emergency to me or they woulda asked me to call.

And I'm about to move again, and I don't know my new address, so I have no answer for em anyway.

You know... the one run by the NSA. Nothing to worry about, nothing to see. Just go on about your daily business and leave everything to Them.

10. Why would the IRS want this info
Are you paying off back taxes? Are you paying self-employment taxes quarterly? If not they have no reason to ask for this. Are you sure it's really the IRS?

18. I am not paying back taxes.
I owe the state of MN some taxes, but not the IRS.

The more I mull this over, here's the other fucked up thing. My last name is wrong. I still carry my married name on my SS card, even though I am divorced, I have NEVER gotten a letter from the IRS asking for info other than to get off my ass and fix my name.

The typo in my address and my wrong last name are making me think this is some sort of mail fraud.

11. I've been living at the same address
for sixteen years now, but in the past when I moved I don't ever recall getting any such letter.

This strikes me as more than a little odd. Why would they need to update your address like this? They'd be finding out your new address in the normal course of events when next you file a return.

What's the address on the envelope they've so thoughtfully provided to you? Is it the same place you send your tax return to?

19. No it's not.
It's in Philly and I live in the upper midwest, my returns go to St. Paul.

12. I agree, that is unusual from the IRS
but I will say this, they are not screwing around anymore. They are watching people like hawks to make sure they get their taxes past, present and future. Its kinda scary, thanks to this asshole admin, they gave alot more power to the IRS.

They usually don't care where you are unless you haven't filed a tax return.

21. I didn't last year,
Edited on Tue Oct-17-06 03:37 PM by KyndCulture
cause I was on unemployment and didn't make enough to even file. I had like 540.00 in taxable income. I was living with family, it was a horrid year in 2005.

and I certainly haven't even thought about filing a return yet for 2006.

It's the 2 suspicious things, my wrong last name and the exact typo from my voter ID that have me on the train to paranoia-land.

23. That's probably what it is. You'll probably get some kind of
notification about filing last year's return and have to explain why you didn't.

22. That don't sound right to me. They have never been proactive
in chasing update of addresses.

That would be updated through your next submission of a return. Or they would track you through the w-2's or 1099's submitted by employers.

If you are in their system for delinquency of some kind, that's one thing. And they will find you through data bases of all kinds.

Information sent to the IRS is voluntary compliance (a mixed metaphor if I ever heard one) but that's what it is.

They are not connected with voter registration and for them to be sending a mystery request to update an address, something is fishy about that.

26. Okay, so given everything
you've said so far, especially the address discrepancies, it's some kind of a scam. Ignore it. You're paying your taxes like a good little citizen, so do not respond to it.
