We need Senator Jeffords to start the Filibuster!
Listening to Randi Rhodes a short time ago, she laid out this plan:
Jeffords as an Independent will be the last to vote, and he should start the filibuster.

He would be ideal, and they couldn't scream partisanship.

We need to influence, inspire and urge Jeffords to lead the charge for Filibuster!

Does this sound like a good plan? It sounded good to me!

Senator Jeffords: (202) 224-3121

5. I though I heard Jeffords is having
medical problems and that is the reason he is not running in 06.

8. He is having medical problems
and people are sort of tiptoeing around the fact that his mental acuity is not what it once was. I don't know if he's in the early stages of Alzheimer's or what, but he's having memory and orientation problems. I really don't think he's up to leading a filibuster, and I hope folks will respect that.

9. I'm sorry to hear that
I seem to remember he had some medical problems, but I hadn't heard anything about the mental acuity/memory loss problems.
That's difficult.

He could start the filibuster, and then some Dems could jump on and carry the ball. Didn't Kerry say he would support a filibuster?

Since he's (Jeffords) not running again, it would be a hell of a farewell message!

10. It doesn't work that way
Once you get to the final vote it is too late to filibuster.

11. Really?
I don't know myself, I was just going with Randi's idea. Hmmm... she is usually quite informed on these things. Of course, maybe I misunderstood her, or maybe I am misrepresenting her suggestion.

Did anyone else hear her talk about this? She brought it up twice in the last hour. The second time was as she was signing off for the day. I think I'll send her/her staff an email asking that she speak more about this tomorrow.

Thanks for your post. Now I'm really curious...

12. cloture
There is a vote to cut off debate and have the final vote. You need 60 votes to get cloture. Filibuster means that you have 41 votes to keep from going to the final vote. Despite the general impression from movies - one Senator can not filibuster. There have been quite a few posts here discussing the process and history of the filibuster.
