Why Aren't Democrats (Or Even ... Republicans) Demanding Ney Resign?

<snip>

House Republican leaders, who have been unsuccessful in their "efforts" over the last month to get Ney to resign, plan to formally expel him for the House after next month's election. For the time being, Ney will continue to draw his $165,000 salary, even as he prepares for a 27-month prison sentence.

If the Republicans lose the House next month, give credit to Ney's selfishness and the House Republicans' inability to do anything about it.

1. It's better if he doesn't resign, constant reminder
The dems have to be careful because they will undoubtedly throw Trafficant in our face. He campainged for while in prison.

3. i disagree
If Ney's name is mentioned in debates, on the cable news chatfests, it just embarrasses the GOP. It's just another failure of the current Republican leadership.

Let them bring up Trafficant, and then the Dem says, "but that was years ago, and look at Ney, Cunningham, Foley, DeLay ... all with the current House."

4. You may be right
I think it's better to keep Ney and Hastert in power, until the elections.

Pelosi Statement on Bob Ney's Guilty Plea

10/13/2006 11:56:00 AM

To: National Desk

Contact: Brendan Daly or Jennifer Crider, 202-226-7616, both of the Office of Nancy Pelosi

WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on Republican Congressman Bob Ney's guilty plea this morning:

"Bob Ney's guilty plea today is a tragedy for his family, his constituents and all Americans, and it is further proof that the Republican culture of corruption has pervaded Congress.

"Speaker Hastert and the Republican leadership have allowed Mr. Ney to remain on the public payroll for a month after his admission of guilt to criminal conspiracy charges. House Republican leaders have a long pattern of protecting Republican members, even when it comes at great cost to the American people.

"Three senior Republicans have already resigned amid scandal in the 109th Congress -- Congressman Ney should resign immediately. If the speaker will not force Congressman Ney to resign, then the House must move to expel him.

"It is long past time for a new direction that restores integrity and civility to the House."

5. If the Dem candidates don't run a slew of ads based on the fact that Ney
is convicted but still in office, they have no brains.

7. the problem is ...
the Dems in recent years have not gone for the kill in their ads. It's almost like they assume/hope the people will figure things out.

In 2004 -- and even now -- I can't understand why the DNC isn't running ads showing Bush joking at the 2004 correspondent's dinner about not being able to find WMD. At that point, 500 were dead. Now 2,700 are dead. It's still relevant.

Or why not show Rumsfeld saying that the war will last "five days, five weeks, five months." Or show Cheney saying that the insurgency is "in the last throes."

Remind people why they don't want Republicans running the government. Tell people why they should vote Democrat: "While the Republicans use fact-challenged catchphrases like "cut and run" to defend their failed strategy, Democrats -- in agreement with an overwhelming majority of Americans -- want a smart solution for Iraq. We must properly arm our troops and the vehicles they use. Unlike the Bush Administration, Democrats understand the power of working with our friends in NATO and elsewhere, to try to come up ..."
