this a.m. Wash. Journal asked us what we thought of WALLS

already built walls like the Wall of China, E. Berlin Wall and Israel's Wall.

and the walls to be built: our wall on the Mexico border; the wall the Saudis are building; and the wall another mid east country is going to build (can't remember which one)

I think that because of global warming's race to destruction more and more walls will be built.

walls to protect oil, gas, water and food. militarys will build walls around their bases. corporations will build walls to protect their assets. the rich will not only live in gated communities but their houses and property within the gates will have walls. and the not so rich will band together and build walls.

I'd rather live in a peaceful world without walls and borders but that dream is dead because of global warming.

what do you all think?

1. A world without walls, yes. But I don't think a world without
borders is possible. People have a very basic need to belong to a unit, a tribe, if you will. We are pretty parochial creatures and will always find some way to define ourselves in terms of a group. The most logical one is that of ethnicity or familial ties, and, for a "nation of immigrants," in terms of nationalism.

3. I think that these are times in which people the world over
are fearful and uncertain of the future. There is much instability now in international relationships and old alliances have been broken and the new ones that have been sought are tenuous. People build walls to protect themselves. Walls will continue to go up until the nations with the big guns can rid themselves of their neoconservative taskmasters.
