They are presuming that it was a aircraft in trouble, which is the most likely scenerio.
There is dispute on whether it was a coptor of fixed-wing. Apparently no actual witnesses have been found. CNN is saying it was a fixed-wing craft. MS-NBC is not being definitive.
This building's location, and the direction of the collision indicate that the plane may have come from La Guardia.
No indications that it was terrorism. Not a target. No threats. Gov't is calling it "a terrible accident".
5. There is a VFR flyway that is called "The Hudson Tour"....
...basically it takes a sightseer past the Statue of Liberty over the bridges of the East River and around the north tip of Manhattan. Most of the time the plane lands at Teteboro (TEB) after a spectacular flight. Unfortunately, the weather at the time of the accident showed a ceiling of approximately 1600' and overcast which are marginal conditions for flying under Visual Flight Rules (VFR).
My advice is to standby for more information. My speculation right now is the pilot probably got spooked by ceilings that were deteriorating and took a wrong turn to the west.
