We can't just assume the anti-GOP sentiment will translate into votes. Voting is very different than opinions.

10. Problem here: Shuster (R), yes-- the son of the slime Bill Shuster is
probably going to win easily here. Weak Dem opponent should use ads that say "Shuster supports Hastert, who covers up the acts of a sexual predator" He is not saying it. ALL dems should use this in ads now.

18. Or to put it another way, 2/3 of Texas voters don't
even want the guy who will probably be re-elected.

The problem in this case is that a lot of Texans have been fooled by Kinky into thinking he's truly an independent. He voted for bush in both 2000 and 2004 and is a republican.

In the case of the Strayhorn woman, she is capturing women who would have voted for Perry and maybe a few other silly people.

The vote is, unfortunately, being split four ways. Too many silly Democrats in this state have fallen for the Kinky thing. It's seen as sort of cool and rebellious if you're for Kinky. Bleh. He's a republican.

So it's a Democrat running against three republicans. It was going to be Perry no matter what, we're making strides here, but we aren't quite at the point where we'll have a Dem governor again (give us a couple more cycles, ok?). But still, the stupidity of the four way race has me constantly rolling my eyes. Bell has been endorsed by a lot of papers across the state as being the most well-informed and most capable and he was the declared winner of the recent debate.

14. IMO this is the most important statement from any of those articles...
A Republican, she voted for Bush in 2004. She is uncertain if she will stick with the party this fall. But she is not hot on Democrats, either.
"I never see them explain how they could do it better," Hall said. "If somebody could explain how they could do it better, then I think I'd be more open to their ideas."

********************************

These are the people we must talk with and explain how we (the Democrats) will do better. I don't mean impeachment, that's an issue that will not make their lives better. And quite frankly, it's putting the cart before the horse.
I mean, find four or five issues that are important to them, explain how the Republicans have failed and give them a good, understandable explanation of how we will handle the job better.
Don't talk to them like they're stupid, that'll just turn them off. Don't expect them to immediately say, "Oh...I see. I'm gonna vote Democrat." Just give them something to think about. Many, not all, will see that we're on the right road.

16. no, you're completely wrong

What people like that want is not what you so lightly imagine. You're not hearing what they're really saying.

What they're really saying is: tell me that you're conservative enough, that you'll keep the changes minimal or small, that you're just a peachy clean variety of small c conservative Republican...and I might just give you my vote this one time.

We can't and absolutely shouldn't cater to that hope of being Republican Lite, to be succeeded again by Republicans in the near future.

Let them go this time.

Yes, they are stupid. Don't fall for the temptation of stupidity yourself, and give them hope that the failed conservatism they cling to will prevail and be resurrected.

made the same point as rpannier, I would have to see a lot more evidence to be convinced that you are correct about the majority of "people like that." I am sure that you are right on target with regard to SOME of them.

It does not help that the media has frequently misstated or refused to present Democratic positions (see Mediamatters.org for tons of evidence). But I think rpannier has a very good point that the Democrats need to come up with (I would say 10) short, clear statements summarizing their positions on key issues that voters care about. These do not have to be "Republican Lite" (and nothing rpannier said sounded like Republican Lite to me) but they have to be understandable to the average person who is unwilling or unable to spend the time to become fully informed on where Democrats stand on the issues. For example, the majority of Americans support Dem positions on abortion, Social Security, health care, etc. But many of them don't realize it.

A Democratic Rep could follow her around, outlining their plans and proposals to her 24/7 for a week and she would still claim they had no plan or message.

2. The Poll Trap

Many progressives slavishly follow polls. The job of leaders is to lead, not follow. Besides, contrary to popular belief, polls in themselves do not present accurate empirical evidence. Polls are only as accurate as the framing of their questions, which is often inadequate. Real leaders don't use polls to find out what positions to take; they lead people to new positions.

30. It's fun to see this folks but let's not rest on our laurels. We
need to get out there and knock on doors and pass out flyers and handbills and we need to keep pounding the pavement! And donate as much time and money as you can.

Don't let those polls lull you into a false sense of security. We know all too well not to trust the "liberal" media anyway.

Barbara Ann Radnofsky is too far behind to hope for a victory against Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. I live in TX-17 (a blue oasis in a sea of red!) and it looks like Chet Edwards will coast to a win here. So, basically, Texas is a dead stick. I think my time would be best spent talking up Chris Bell for Governor, though he's only getting a mere 14%, tied with Kinky Friedman, and the incumbent repug Perry is at 31%. A sad election year as usual for a Dem in the Lone Star State. Can't wait 'til 08!

31. What is great about this is that all the
news gathering organizations as well as television have to report them. They then become self proliferating.

People who are too dumb or uniformed to have a clue how to evaluate republican lies easily understand 54 is a bigger number than 39. They say to themselves--hmm, I guess most people must think 54 is the good one and they follow right along with the crowd. That is the subliminal benefit.

The other, is that bad poll number reporting tends to generate more bad numbers.

Only the fingernails are hanging on the cliff now. All we have to do is step on their hands.
