I talked to Woodward on Dianne Rehm today.
Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 12:30 PM by Gabi Hayes
I was the last caller, and asked him what it was like to talk to people he KNEW were lying to him.

but, before that I ranted about how this was by far the worst, most corrupt, criminal administration in history

I offered in evidence how they've destroyed the constitution (got rid of habeas corpus), ruined the economy, the environment, packed the courts with right wing extremists, and LIE all the time; they never tell the truth. above all they lied about what they knew in the run up to the war. I said they asserted "there is NO DOUBT that Saddam has reconstituted his nuclear weapons program," and a few other things.

after I said the bit about talking to liars, I said the ''whole thing sickens me, and...." at which point they cut me off, but I said, not knowing I was off the air, that it sickened me that Woodward held back his knowledge of the Plame affair, and that, had he come forward, it's most likely that Bush wouldn't have been able to steal another election. That didn't air, unfortunately.

Woodward's initial response was something like, "I see the caller feels very strongly, blah blah blah"

I was STEAMED, though, and was initially going to ask about the Rice/Tenet meeting, and how many people felt that THAT was the most important revelation of his book, but she asked him about that herself, and did a much more comprehensive job discussing it than Russert's throwaway question to him on MTP.

anybody hear that? it'll be on her site in the near future

on edit: I didn't really talk to him, just posed my rant/question, and that's my gripe with so many of these shows: no give and take. they just let you state the question, then let the guest go on and on with no chance for re-direct. they really need to change that formula

I was able to do that on Talk of the Nation in 2000, where I asked to say one more thing to McCain after I asked him how he could support Bush, knowing that he quit flying, and failed to show up for guard duty in Alabama. after they let me back on, I corrected him on his defense of Bush showing up there, based on the bogus claim of some woman who said he told her went, or something, then said I can't believe he was supporting 'an empty suit like Bush'.

20. thx.....yeah he did, but I was so steamed at what I didn't get to say, and
that they cut me off, that I didn't really listen

howEVER, it looks like you can listen to the show here, already. I didn't try, but the link for real audio is here:

http://www.wamu.org/audio/dr/06/10/r2061009-12052.ram

from the website:

http://www.wamu.org/programs/dr /

the Foley discussion is well worth a listen, too. the three guests had a lot of disdain for the way the pugs are "handling" this

7. how hopped up did I sound? was I coherent?
I wish some DUers that are better informed, etc., than I would call into these shows, and get after these people. sure wish we had a chance to tell the real truth.

I was also on a show (some life) on a Wisconsin NPR station this morning, cause some lying RW sac of shite was braying about how Clinton turned the White House into the penthouse, and that the dems let SENATOR Barney Frank off, even though he turned his apartment into a WHOREHOUSE. that steamed me so much I had to call in to set the record straight.

I used the knowledge of the ethics committee investigation that I read about HERE yesterday that proved that Frank didn't know about the 'ring,' and that the phone calls allegedly made, or forwarded to his place DID NOT, most likely happen, and that the guy who dimed Frank was a big liar, as well as the caller, who typified the RW's approach to every controversy, which is to lie and deflect, just as they did to Gore and Kerry (I cited the Swiftboaters). This forces the dems on the defensive, which makes them repeat chapter and verse to refute the easily told lies, which, by the time the refutation has a chance to be aired, have sunk into the public consciousness. the ahole guest, a poli-sci prof at the U of Illinois, where, ironically I took many poli sci courses, 'set the record straight' by saying that he thought congress DID nail Frank, actually. they wouldn't let me back on to tell him that their reprimand was for fixing about 30 parking tickets for his lovah; that was it. I also used the simple refutation that comer perro (?), I think, posited here yesterday: why didn't dems simply ask why the republicans condemn the actions of sickos like Foley, instead of muddy the waters with their tactics? Don't they care about what happens to the children?

4. and aNOTHER thing....as I sat on hold for most of the show, I thought:
why can't people like us, at DU, be on these shows? Every single topic they covered, I know DUers could do a better job than most hosts, and wouldn't be afraid to ruffle guests' feathers; course, who'd go on a show where they knew their feet would be held to the fire.

they talked about Bandar/Saudi Arabia helping keep oil prices down in 04, and how Woodward didn't think that was the case so much this time, cause the drop was SO precipitous. BUT, he didn't know about the Sachs Goldman/Paulson/oil futures connection discussed here (where's that thread?).

I also wanted to talk about the Card/State Street Bank/Hunter connection, after Woodward sorta bragged about interviewing Card for seven hours.

then there was the REAL rub, which I may have covered in his rant: Woodward claimed that they BELIEVED there were WMDs, as did everybody else (of course!), including himself, and that Bush was acting out of idealism! Well, Bob, you apparently chose to ignore the stovepiping, the cherrypicking, the purposeful ignoring of ALL the contradictory evidence that cast doubt on their existence.

and blah blah blah

if you get the show in reruns on your local outlet, it's a good interview; better than Russert, but it shows how tied into the system they all are, and how difficult it is to get the real truth. Wish I'd said that

8. that's another thing I wanted to ask him about as I sat there.
did he believe the substance of that, and if not, why not?

he said Bush really decided to go into Iraq in January or Feb of 2002! I almost dropped one when he said that. I wanted to ask him about TreasSec ONeill's remarks about them wanting Iraq in February of 01, or why he didn't nail Rumsfeld about wanting to go in almost immediately after 911. we all know he was widely quoted as saying so

but the BIG thing I wanted to ask, and, told the screener I would, after DR asked about Tenet/Condi, was how could Woodward sit there and tell us that Bush was in any way in charge, when all evidence leads one to believe that Cheney was the actual president. He talked about how Dan Coates was interviewed for SecDef by both Cheney and Bush. I wanted to ask him WHO was doing the interviewing, and whether he ever got into that sort of thing, as well as what his personal impression of that relationship was

11. That's where Woodward suckers some people...he still propagates the fable
of the Bush Administration, that they believed and simply were mistaken, misled by their intel. And that "everyone" believed it too. Woodward perpetuates the official myth of this Administration despite all the evidence to the contrary.

9. Oh yeah...my BIGGEST regret was not mentioning DU as the
font of real, unadulterated political knowledge. a place where people can get more and better information on the way things REALLY are than just about anywhere else.

not perfect, of course; what is, but what's a better clearinghouse for TRUTH than this place?

15. exactly...very well put. and THAT's why we are where we are today.
the MEDIA have refused to do their job, and it's been left to the likes of you, blm, who work their ASSES off to spread the word

I'm so disgusted

as I type, Issikoff (sp) just talked about the "doctoring" of intel, and the like, to get us into the Iraq war will go down in history with the sinking of the Maine

then, he talks about how everybody but Powell's INR got the intel right, where everybody else got it WRONG

hey, Mike, they didn't get it wrong, they LIED about what they KNEW to be right.

why is it so hard for you to be able to make that simple distinction? you sure didn't have any problem doing it with Clinton, did you

I hate that smarmy prick almost as much as I loathe this junta

14. thanks! I just wish I'd started off with the Plame withholding, because
you KNOW the effect that would have had on the election, if he hadn't sat on it for over a year

I wonder what the time frame on the interviews for this book was, as well. there's a LOT in there that could/should have been reported in the Post, but, obviously, it would have been scooping his book and cost him tons of money

btw, Isikoff is on Al Franken right now, and their book sounds like it's much more damning than Woodwards

Hubris: The Inside Story of Spin, Scandal, and the Selling of the Iraq War
by Michael Isikoff, David Corn
Hardcover, 480 pages
Crown
0-3073-4681-1
What was really behind the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq? As George W. Bush steered the nation to war, who spoke the truth and who tried to hide it? HUBRIS: The Inside Story of Spin, Scandal, and the Selling of the Iraq War (Crown, September 8, 2006) takes us behind the scenes at the Bush White House, the CIA, the Pentagon, the State Department, and Congress to answer all the vital questions about how the Bush administration came to invade Iraq. HUBRIS, a gripping narrative, is filled with new revelations. The book disclosures include:

* President Bush was driven by a visceral hatred of Saddam Hussein, which he privately demonstrated in expletive-laden tirades against the Iraqi dictator. In May 2002--months before he asked Congress for authority to attack Saddam-Bush bluntly revealed his ultimate game plan in a candid moment with two aides. When told that reporter Helen Thomas was questioning the need to oust Saddam by force, Bush snapped: "Did you tell her I intend to kick his sorry mother fucking ass all over the Mideast?" In a meeting with congressional leaders, the President angrily thrust his middle finger inches in front of the face of Senator Tom Daschle to illustrate Saddam's attitude toward the United States.

27. I HEARD you!
I was sitting in my car in the driveway listening to you and then it just went to dead air, so I turned it off and went inside and never did hear Woodward's response, (don't know if it actually played on our station).

This is not the first time on our NPR affiliate that the Diane Rehm show has gone dead when something particularly provocative has come up.

Congrats, and you were great! :toast:

You were very cool, very calm. You have a great speaking voice!

For whatever it's worth, I've tried to get in via her phonelines numerous times but I'm never one of the ones she picks dammit! I've resorted to trying to email her as well as sitting waiting on the phone. She only takes 5-8 calls/show and you just know she is swamped.

She hasn't picked any of my emails but she always groups a large volume of the same questions/emails on the same subject into one group, relaying the message through one person.

Do you think Susan Page is going to be the next host/hostess when Diane finally stops broadcasting? She keeps picking Susan to be her replacement when she goes for her voice treatments and I don't think Susan is nearly as smart or as intuitive about hitting the high points.

I worked with Diane's husband, John, for about 36 years. Practically, all my adult life. I'm glad Diane has been such a success. They have both been good liberals. I'm retired now, so when I went to her website and saw her book "Toward Commitment", I ordered it right away. Thanks again.
