Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 07:10 AM by Hubert Flottz
Are the TV preachers really closet Gays and just being fake anti gay, gay bashers, for show like Foley and some of the other GOP politicians, who they cheer on and campaign for?

I mean, I'm not gay and I don't understand why supposedly straight men like Jerry Foulwill, Pat Robertson and Dokktor Dobson, are so obsessed with what gay folks are doing, unless they are gay too and want in on some of that action.

What gay people do, or don't do, does not bother me, one way or another, as long as they aren't chumping out underage children. So WHY are these guys ALWAYS so focused, on what gay people are doing all the time? Maybe we need to separate Sex and religion BOTH, from politics?

3. There's got to be a reason for the dead silence from the pulpit
over Guckert's sleepovers in the White House and now Foley's trying to hustle male pages in Congress and beyond.

I've always said Guckert's client list might offer a clue to the solidarity of the GOP and the timidity of many Democrats.

5. One has spoken out ...
DOBSON: As it turns out, Mr. Foley has had illicit sex with no one that we know of, and the whole thing turned out to be what some people are now saying was a sort of a joke by the boy and some of the other pages By midafternoon yesterday, a rumor emerged that in fact Mark Foley had been pranked by the House pages. It is the first plausible thing I've heard in seven days.

6. I don't think it has to do with being gay - I think they're deviant.
And they surely enjoy gay sex - perhaps with their sons or other boys, maybe twinks, maybe even each other. But they go beyond merely gay to deviant: pedophilia, bestiality, S&M, prostitutes, gang bangs, rapes, etc.

Those who protest too much about other people's sex lives are often, I think, trying to hide the far more extreme sexual deviancy they are doing. Especially republicans and right wing Christians.

9. Yup, there's Jim Bakkker, Jim Jones, David Koresh and Swaggart
all been caught up in "deviant" sexual episodes and then Dobson talking about nude showers with his own son? Pat and Jerry doing hour after hour of TV shows about SEX?

The very first preacher I can ever really remember, as a child going to Sunday School, ran off with another man's wife, who was BTW, my fine looking young red headed Sunday School teacher, who as I now recall after all these years, had quite a lot of natural "Spunk and Moxie" of her own!

18. Jim Bakker may be a crook and a bit of a hypocrit, but
he never discriminated against gays (considering he was bi, to say the least). He preached a "love all people" message. He specifically stated that although he considered homosexuality a sin, he always said that God loves gays as much as anyone else.

I know that gays have objections (which I totally understand) to anyone who considers homosexuality to be a sin, but I just wanted to differentiate between a guy like Bakker, who preaches God loves everyone equally and the ones who say gays are going to burn in hell and should be discriminated against.

Tammey Faye is a friend to gay men everywhere, btw. Her fall from grace has made her a more compassionate person overall. She is suufering and possibly dying from cancer and all her gay friends are there to support her and love her.

I should have been clearer, because you are right - S&M is not, itself, a deviant practice (at least, not IMO).

I'm thinking S&M with real torture, feces, cutting, Marquis de Sade stuff.

17. Holy Troll-ers?
The Televangelistofascists, can BLAME the democrats all they want, for trying to nip their political power and the awesome political power, of their cash based church, in the bud...but the biggest negative factor, in the downfall of their bogus kind of self serving religion, is the HYPOCRISY it is built on and based on.

HYPOCRISY is the germ that infects the church and sucks away it's life blood. People finally either see through the bogus BULLSHIT, or they sink right along with the sinking ship.

21. I agree, thank you.
I have little patience with those who equate ANY mention of homosexuality -- beyond a wedding announcement -- as "gay bashing." By that reasoning, mentioning the Foley scandal AT ALL equates to White Male Bashing. Anglo-phobia? Sometimes things are what they are, and merely talking about them doesn't mean you're "phobic" about the issue. I think you're spot-on...the OP was about the hypocrisy, nothing more. THEY try to whip up the fear by claiming there is an inherent evil just in saying the word "homosexual." The people on DU who try to shut down any such mention aren't much better. A free flow of ideas is a good thing, and yes, even if those ideas are off-based, like the "homophobia" cryers. Dialogue is good...shutting down discussion by calling people "phobic" is lame.

10. They Are Homophobic And ..
...there is not one word Jesus spoke about people who are gay. Not one. And they know it. They use gays to cover up the REAL sin that they know full well foments nothing but war, famine, poverty, and misery. The major sin Jesus spoke about is greed, when he said, "It is harder for the rich man to get into heaven than for a camel to pass through the eye of the needle ..."

Alot of evangelists try to justify being rich by telling the story of how Jerusalem had this small gate where a camel would have to pass through it on its knees. Thus trying to say that, if you remain in prayer and are not sexual, then you can kill, maim, lie and use the law to steal and still remain godly. They would prefer to pretend that sex, especially love for a same sex, is the worse sin, when in reality they practice and encourage others to practice that open and obvious avarice is just fine.

If you read Mark 18 Jesus makes it plain about greed when a rich man asks him what else he can do to be godly and Jesus tells him to sell everything he has, and follow the teachings of Love (my rephrasing). But the man becomes very sad because he is very wealthy. This is when Jesus looks long at this man and utters the famous phrase I have quoted above.

Most mega-churches are into the immediate feel-good, rapturous, experience, so people are constantly barraged with this underlying message that you need to be afraid, very afraid, soon the "bad guys are coming and taking all you own, God does not want you to be poor, and this is why the church leaders are so comfortable, so pay us to fight the unseen forces for you so you can keep it all ..." because well, God loves them more. The elaborate stages, the expensive suits, the huge choirs, this is all glitz to "prove" that God loves them more because hey the end times are coming and they are not participating in the world's sin because they are not gay! Forget that they support greed and in order to keep all they feel entitled to have, they have to support torture, hatred of other religions (which Jesus also condemned)and war ( to get even more wealth).

Homophobia is being used as a smoke and mirrors issue to hide greed. The greed of their religious leaders. It symbolizes the belief that when the end times come, sin will dominate society and corrupt everyone's hearts (but not the "special chosen" if they stay straight). They use gayness to epitomize all sin, but of course greed is not included in this picture, because if it were, it would ask some tough questions most Americans do not want to ask about capitalism and the idea that a majority, even if it is slim, means you don't have to honor the beliefs and needs of the losing group ~ clearly not in the message of Jesus. Most importantly to them, it is another way of planting the fear of becoming corrupted in the hearts of their members, excluding greed as a form of corruption, because that fear generates more contributions in the collection plate so members will think on a sublimal level that the more they contribute, the better chance they have of buying their way into heaven.

14. Thanks for your 2 cents...I agree with you.
It was the 2 cent donation, from the very poorest of the poor, that made the impression on Jesus, far more than the bigger bags of money the rich men could afford to give to the church. It's the thought that counts.

I think that greed COULD, very well be the downfall of our country...Greed after all, has been the downfall of so many others before us.

Jerry and Pat should leave the Judging of others to God, if Jerry And Pat truly are, Godly men.

15. I definitely think Fred Phelps is
Just based on one photo I saw of him - he was wearing an off-pink cowboy shirt - the kind with the monogram-like etching that traces out the two pockets on the chest and sketchs a few little designs above them, his white cowboy hat, and he was heavily rouged and looked like he had lipstick on. He looked like a former drag queen that had gone to pot and had lost all his fashion sense. Think Nathan Lane from the Birdcage aged 35 years and having terminal depression.

Why can't Jerry and Pat mind their own business?

Why can't they worry about their own cases before Saint Peter?

I could care less, where Jerry and Pat wind up spending eternity.

So why should their crazy wants, ideas and whims, or even their private sexual orientations, influence our government, which will partly shape my way of life and my well being, for the rest of my life? These people have much more say so, than you or I have, about the way our government works today, even though their churches don't pay their fair share of taxes, like you and I must do.

37. There are really two types of anti-gays, more or less
The first kind would be my sister and brother-in-law. They're very conservatively religious, and they will get pissed about seeing two men walking down the street holding hands, and they'll make a comment about it but then go on with their lives. I don't think they're right of course, but that's their belief system.

The second kind just go on and on about how much they hate homosexuals, go into details about what they think they do, etc. Those are the ones that are more likely to be closeted - not just to the general population but even to themselves.

...and certainly not televangelists/RW operatives. Gay bashing brings in the money. People here don't realize just how successful fund raising is when the gay bashing comes. It's about fortune and control, for these people, not about repressed sexuality. Gleaning some kind of secret homosexual life out of it is homophobia in itself.
