| Eisenhower and Goering Quotes |
|
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron." Dwight Eisenhower
"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger." Hermann Goering

"All of us have heard this term 'preventative war' since the earliest days of Hitler. I recall that is about the first time I heard it. In this day and time... I don't believe there is such a thing; and, frankly, I wouldn't even listen to anyone seriously that came in and talked about such a thing."
Aww heck, while we're at it, one from George Washington:
"As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality."

Did Eisenhower say these things while still in office or was the "machine" still his master?

i think he said that after the 1960 election, when he was leaving office.
i remember ike from when i was a kid. he drew a lot of criticism because he played golf alot.
in hindsight, he seems like he was a good pres.
the ex-military guys can be good because they know how horrible war is. guys like curtis lemay maybe not so good.
but macarthur ran japan after they lost and was downright compassionate with their reconstruction and post war planning.

today. His speech was a warning, but as a former five star general I'm sure he knew the futility of his speech. At least he made it.
